Check this article out on Jalopnik about a cam-less engine. It's not the first, not even the first in a car, but it's the closest one to production ready for automotive use.

Good on CVK, I like that he is willing to work on stuff that no one else will, just because he can. Louts Fiat(really Ferrari during those years), Renault, and everyone else put a lot of money into cam-less engine systems, but since F1 was pretty clear to them that it would never be allowed, they dropped the development. Had F1 let them develop the tech and run it in F1 cars, we would probably have them in production today, just like so much of the stuff learned from KERS is into production cars today. |

Simply a natural evolution of valve timing tech like Fiat's multi-air system or the stuff BMW has been working on for years.
Both camshafts and throttles are utterly unnecessary once you have solenoids that can cycle fast enough (and stand up to the heat and duty cycle).
Unfortunately for journalists, logic doesn't make good "zomg Kermit arms" articles, so we get nonsense like this. |

I read an article in Hot Rod at least 15 years ago regarding mechanical actuators which could be used to open and close valves that could be completely controlled by the ECM to change valve timing and just about any other variable. About 15 years ago I was looking at a Coates rotary valve head swap on my LT1 Corvette. It was pretty expensive but could have easily made 700 Hp and driven like a normal car. The only limit to rpm's was the capability of the short block. |

Jon, is CAT working on one of these? I know Cummin's has been for years but the last one I saw they still hadn't gotten reliability out of it. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
