Didn't take many pictures today as the progress (while exciting) was not really conducive to photography.
Intake going together for (hopefully) the last time:
Wrapping Gabe's engine harness:
On the fuel rail front I did exactly what I mentioned in the thread: dropped each "leg" into the vise horizontally, torched it and compressed it flat. Then I set each one in the vise vertically at the correct height, reheated, and peened into an 'L' shape again. The issue came when I needed to slot the holes in the brackets. Not having a small die grinder here (and being the impatient asshole that I am) I did it with the drill. They came out functional but not real pretty. Pressurized the fuel system again and no leaks. There is virtually no vertical movement in the injectors anymore (I dropped it about a 1/4", like I said, impatient asshole ).
After some forking around with that, this is the state of things this evening:
Now the boring car nerd question/discussion part!
1) I am using the factory fourth-gen brake check valve thingy. Is that thing going to survive under boost or should I run an inline valve?
2) The 3800S2 uses a silly, complicated internal PCV system. I mapped it out and have the correct in and out, but I just want a damn catch can vent. I am thinking it will go like this: Breather on the old airbox side, leave the PCV slot empty, line to catch can, line to intake tube pre-turbo. Sound like a thing, or am I missing something?
3) Is there any up/downside to running the IAT sensor in the throttlebody right before the blades? I am used to seeing them in the airbox or in the intake, not in the TB. Wondering if that's a thing.

1)How much boost? Although I guess you'll find out the first time you hit redline if it holds!
2)I run my catch can from the PCV to pre-turbo intake tube. Sound basically like what you're planning sans intake/pcv routing?
3)IAC or IAT? _________________

1) 20lbs. has been the target based on the bottom end and headgaskets.
2) Yup! The 3800 PCV system actually works totally normally, it's just crazy Dr. Seuss-style pipes running all over! I am curious if I still need the valve itself, and if I can build a can or if it needs some baffle BS or whatever.
3) IAT. Head up ass tonight, apparently. |

Remember the TPI IAT is in the intake manifold. I'd run it in the intake tract though. Less likely to heat soak anytime you're stationary for longer periods (traffic? Naaaah, they don't have that in the rural area of the mountain man! )
Catch can baffle = steel wool
No idea on the check valve. I was going to attempt the factory dohickeymajiger. _________________

1. Factory check valve should work as long as it doesn't pass positive pressure. Hook it up to 20 psi on the air compressor and see what happens.
2. Catch can should work as you are planning.
3. Definitely keep the IAT after the intercooler and before the throttle blades. It needs to measure the temp of the air entering the engine, and the only place it can do that is after the intercooler. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Cool beans, Paul. Need any help with the wiring?
Gabe and I did indeed start it a couple times Sunday. We did not keep it running for long as the exhaust ports on the heads are wide open.
I did not get any video as I was busy jumping the starter solenoid and ECM power wires while Gabe manned the laptop hooked to the ECM, but I did snap this pic of our temporary wiring rig (there is no chassis harness in the car yet):
The CTS pigtail needs to be replaced (occasionally it wacks out but can be fixed by wiggling it) and one of the heater hose connections is leaking, but the crazy C3 coilpack and everything else seems to work well. |

I could use a hand. Out of town this weekend. Next week is payday so I'm hoping to at least get a usable circuit or two in there for the welder and compressor even if they aren't where I permanently want them. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
