I could probably wade through some TGO bullcrap and find the answer, but nuts to that, I'll just ask you all!
What's the changeover year when the wiper motors stopped being crap? '88?
Can I use one of the later motors on my '85 without changing the arm, firewall bolt pattern, ect.?
Anybody got one I can buy?
Thanks, guys! |

| Why were they crap? I know on my '88 I lost the intermitten wipers for a while. Only had high and low. Put a pick and pull module on and that fixed it. |

I'm not sure of the physical difference, but each of mine operate differently. The intermittent feature on the 89 is infinite, and the 92 has detents for each speed. _________________ 92 Camaro

Get one without the fluid pump in the desired speed style. I think it was '90. Wiring colors are the same. Different pig tails. Pump goes in the res. Better design and more space at the firewall. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Paul, that's why I'm after a newer one. I had the newer pump in my IROC but I had the old motor which was huge and stupid. When you say "speed style" do you mean pulse vs. two-speed or is there more than those two?
The issue is that I am using the engine bay harness from what I think is an '88 GTA. It has the divorced pump wiring in the harness but the plug to the wiper motor has more wires than the '85 pump (six instead of four) and is a long single row weatherpack vs. the block plug in the '85. Both motors were pulse but I don't have the one from the '88 so I can't compare the guts.
I am curious If I can use any '88-'92 pulse motor or if there were changes in that range. |

OK, your 4-pin plug on the old style motor should also be accompanied by a two pin plug. On the old style pump that you have, the 4-pin goes near the top and the two pin plugs into the bottom of the long motor cylinder. You can swap to a new style pump with the long thin 6-pin plug from your harness. It combines the function of the two plugs IIRC. The only difference between the pulse/non-pulse motors was the plastic plate on the front, which can be swapped to get pulse on a non-pulse motor. The wiring never changed whether you had a pulse motor/combo switch or not.
I'm nearly certain that you can run any style pump you want as long as you either match your harness plug or get a pigtail for whatever plugs it had and change your harness plugs. I don't think the cam/arm/motor part ever changed, just the cover/pump/plug arrangement. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Sweet! I forgot about the pump having it's own plug even on the older motor. So assuming the harness I have cut up across the floor of the shop is the one from GTAJim's old car then I should just be able to buy a later-style motor and reservoir.
So now back to my last question, anybody got one for sale? |

I've got the wiring setup yet from the wiper motor I sold Ian, which he left at my place. It's really easy if you keep all the pigtails. All the wiring colors transfer over too. Then you run Two wires to the pump.
Speed meaning selectable intermittant and one speed intermittant. I honestly don't know if that's in the motor or the brain atop the motor. I just made sure to get one off a car that had selectable.
I kept breaking the fluid nipples on the big motor with my tall valve covers, hense the switch. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

I have the complete engine bay harness from an '88 which has the correct wires and pigtails. I'm in the process of cutting all the useless crap out of it (and there is a lot of that). |

I think maybe 89 was the first. I can't remember, you sure 88 had divorced pump?
The wiper connectors are different between the two. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

I am not sure what the wiring harness came off of, I just know GTAJim sold it to me with a bunch of the parts from his '88.
It has the divorced pump wiring, that I'm sure of. |
