I'm done talking about trucks.
So, Chevy for drivetrain superiority. Ford for vehicle build quality. Dodge for sounding like a log truck and doing nothing else terribly well. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Alright, I'll start a new topic. It's about me. So it should be interesting.
Anyway, I've been thinking about manual vs. auto for my Firebird. I'm more and more leaning towards an auto for the quick 60 foot time. I'm thinking it's going to be pretty hard launching that car with a manual on street tires and I'll be disappointed the first time I get whooped by somebody with half the car.
So I called up RPM Transmissions in Indiana and figured out what it would cost me and my options. They were really nice and even offered to inspect my Jennings T56 for free if I come pick up the new tranny instead of shipping it. That would increase the value of my used T56 since it will have been inspected by reputable shop. If I sell my trans, clutch, driveshaft, and TH400 then I can get into a fully built 4L60E with Precision converter without spending any money. I asked about changing 1st gear ratio but they need another $1200 to change the front planetary. I think I can live with the stock gear ratio. I've got ideas to chew on. And the other cool thing is the guy I was talking to has a 3rd gen and we went off talking about our projects and sharing ideas. Fun phone call. |

Stick. Race from a roll.
You will be disappointed the first few times trying to launch the stick, but you will always be disappointed driving around town with the slushbox. |

It is extremely rare to run from a roll unless it is pre-arranged or at highly illegal speeds. Almost every time I play it will be from a stop. All the roads I drive are 55 mph and under.
I am concerned about fishtailing when the trans slams down. That won't happen nearly as easy if I'm doing the shifting. All I know is the 2001 SS with auto wagged all over the road, and the 2000 T56 went straight as an arrow with 200 more HP underhood. |

You will get better at it, Jon. Quit with the girlmatic s**t and put a real transmission in already. |

Launching with a manual is almost like playing a game. It takes skill, but that skill comes with time and correctly evaluating the variables. Same with shifting fast, it just takes time and practice. It's something where your skills constantly increase.
Maybe it's a tick slower than an auto in an all-out drag, but oh man is it fun, and you really do get better pretty quick. I'd rather be involved in the fun than just mat it and go.
Plus when you're somewhere and a guy comes up to you this happens (even though if you built what you wanted it wouldn't matter):
: Hey man, nice car.
: Thanks man.
What is that thing, a 5-speed?
: Well, it's an auto cause they're faster at drag races and clutches are hard.
: Oh...
Or:
: Hey man, nice car.
: Thanks man.
What is that thing, a 5-speed?
: Nah, 6-speed all the way.
: Holy crap! That's awesome! _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

There's a video on YouTube, can't find it right now, of a guy shifting his mustang (it's grey, don't remember year, 04?) on a track, i think the 1/8th mile. Pretty impressive how fast he is. The better the clutch and transmission you have, the less clutch travel you need to make. Touring cars don't even use the clutch over 30-40 mph. But I don't think we can afford that type of tranny
I'm already sick of my auto, almost traded my car in for a manual 4th gen/GTO. |

WOW I should keep that post as a reminder to not post until I've had some coffee, I was a bit all over the place there.
What I was trying to get at, is that racing transmission now, don't need the clutch at speed. The only time they really use it is in the pits. Like NASCAR, Le Mans, etc. As for clutch travel, I think I was speaking of the pedal? I don't remember, haha! |

This. No synchros in touring cars trans, totally different ball game when the gear teeth face the wrong way.
Regardless, Jon isn't worried about his ability to shift, but his ability to launch. Which is silly, but engineers get paid to worry about silly sh** so the rest of us don't have to. |

There isn't an application on earth that I would choose auto over stick. When I was running parts for GM the truck was in the shop one day and I stole an xtreme s10 with the 4.3/5speed off the used car lot and I think that was the most fun I ever had delivering parts. I mean aside from me actually grenading the auto in the Colorado. _________________

| So let me ask how many of you have actually driven a car with an extremely well built auto and 3500+ RPM converter? It is definitely interactive. And it ain't your granny's tranny. I don't think a manual ever put a smile on my face as large as the first time I felt a car respond to a high quality torque converter. |

Then you haven't towed enough trailers through rush hour traffic with an underpowered engine.

If you're dead-set on just getting the zero-60 time in a straight line then yeah, just go ahead and ruin the car. |
