While helping Flea today I fired up the ole oven and baked me up some intake. While I use this color alot, I think it will look real nice with the crinkle black valve covers on the 74.

Do you bake it in an old oven, or kitchen it??

A few years ago I bought an old kitchen oven off Craigs for $50. Keep it out in the barn. And yes, this is black chrome powder. I primed it since its cast, then black chrome, then cleared.

I have the craftsman gun. It's totally self contained.. no compressor or anything needed. It's good for small jobs like this.

My gun is basically like a hair dryer, but it also generates static electricity. You ground the part with a clip from your gun, then as the powder comes out of the gun it blows by the other electrode charging the powder. This is what holds the powder to the part.

Clean your part, then bake it for 15 min or so to burn off any residue. The part should be metal prepped too. Let the part cool.

Then if its a cast part, especially brass, then the part needs to be primed. This stops the part from outgassing through your powder and making fish eyes or bubbles. This is a powder too btw. Bake the part for 5-10 min. Let it cool again.

Then you can apply your regular powder. Some powders like this one require more then one layer. This one requires a clear coat on top. More then 3 layers and this craftsman gun doesnt work very well. It needs more electrical current to get the powder to stick. Bake the part for 15-20min. Let it cool again.

Apply clear, bake another 15-20. Part is done when cool.

If you get a setup, you definatly need an outdoor oven. This stuff smokes. You're basically melting plastic to a part.

I've actually wondered about using a propane bbq.. of course it would have to be clean so that you dont have a bunch of soot falling into your coating.

Today I finally swapped the msd6a I had on the 74 for the 6al that I got from Paul.

Who knew that they are opposite from each other? I figured they'd be exactly the same, but all the wires come out from opposite ends!

Some progress on the intake. Got it bolted on today. Made a couple stainless exhaust crossover blockoffs out of a drywall blade. Scares me.. people say you just slip it between the gasket and intake. Sure seems like that will cause problems.. we'll see I guess.

Anyway, I tore the carb base gasket, so I've got to pick one up tomorrow to finish. Means all I have is a progress pic. Taking pictures of this powder is very odd.. the camera never shows the gloss.. its like some kinda anti-gloss xray vision lol.

Sad... hard to believe not long ago the inner fenders were painted and the a-arms powder coated.. Now look how filthy they are.

Well.. I was right. The stainless blockoff's caused problems. Not only is the intake sucking air, the water pump is squirting water out of the crossover LOL. I didnt like these felpro gaskets anyway.. They make a set with a block off I guess.. Time to research the part # and get a set ordered.

Here's a pic of it together... for a little while anyway. Smile

Looks like Summit sells a few for the Poncho with blanks in the middle... I'm assuming that's where the crossover is.

Looks real good. Your work has convinced me to give it a shot. They have the gun and powder at harbour frieght. Now I kbow it is not the best quality gun, but I figured for 70 I,will it out and see how I do. My problem is if it comes out good I wont know where to stop. My daughter might end up with her " My little ponies" collection powder coated Surprised

Success! Got some felpro performance gaskets.. the nice soft stuff instead of that hard blue crap they sell. They have exhaust crossover block offs. Got it all bolted on and idle mix is even right on still. I think I can make an air cleaner fit with a different lid too! The Street Dominator is only 1/4" taller.

Got the air cleaner on.. I think it barely rubs in front by the snorkel. Will see after a run with it.. the inside of this glass hood is wire screen.. it'll shine up a rubbing spot in a hurry! Laughing
