We just picked up a 88 5.7 IROCZ for my son off of craigslist, it has a few issues. I plan to whittle them down one by one. The first one to conquer is a rough idle. Car seems to "hunt" for idle and sometimes stalls. Ive checked the IAC and cleaned it out. seems to be fine. even tried another IAC i had in my box. no change. I'm thinking its the MAF sensor. Any thoughts? other things I need to try?? I know somebody has had the same problem. I'm just trying to avoid throwing allot of parts at it. especially when MAF are running about 125.00... Does anybody have on lying around?? its the 5 pin type. _________________ 88 Camaro IrocZ Convertible 5.0 TPI...

I'd start by checking for vacuum leaks. In my experience, a hunting idle means vacuum leak.

I guess I'll go get a can of ether and do a quick check. I did go over the vacuum lines and couldn't find anything obvious.. I'm not sure what cam this car has in it but it might be a bit steep. the MAF cars do seem to tolerate a bigger cam without too many problems.
I tinkered with it this afternoon and still couldn't get it to idle any better. but going down the street at 20 i can punch it and spin the tires. _________________ 88 Camaro IrocZ Convertible 5.0 TPI...

Carb cleaner tends to be less explodey than ether. Just a thought.
Does the car throw a code at any point?
Does it run any better with the MAF unplugged? |

| Start from the begining and reset the IAC, TPS then timing. My car idled like crap after swapping the TF heads, mild cam to AFR's and a healthy cam. After reseting the IAC, TPS and timing a couple of times it idled much better, especially when cold. Until the cam ate the distributor gear.... |
