Well the bird has started using some oil lately, Many of you may remember I swapped some Vortec heads on the L03 and stabbed in a cam with just over .500" lift. I jumped the gun on researching how much lift my heads could handle and I think I have a spring retainer to valve guide clearance issue, squishing the valve seal and causing the oil burning problem. I did go ahead and do a compression check also and found the old 172K mile 305 has between 165-175PSI across all 8.
So I guess my question is, If I pull the heads, have the guides cut for more lift, and put some new seals on should that fix the oil burning problem? Or do I need something else, maybe new guides? Trying to get the car ready for dyno and back to daily driver status.
Thanks! |

News the guide bosses cut for sure and checked for that lift.
Machine shop will check guide condition while.in there.
Good.compression.... Doesnt tell you that much. Atleast do a leak down. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

the vortec heads generally don't wear guides too bad as a common issue. i build cylinder heads for a living lol yes the guides can me topped down .030" without an issue, and we do have smaller style seals to prevent retainer issues. it's not terribly time hard to top the guides, it's just time consuming. _________________ 1992 Camaro 1LE Z28 |

shizzle I cut Vortec guides down WAY farther than 0.30".
Gotta remember, we don't know what his pushrod geometry is with a head swap and if the retainers are bottoming out, it could wear the guides. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

shizzle you CAN cut them down to the spring seat if you want to lol but id say leave as much material as possible up top. usually between .030"-ish and a shorter seal, it takes care of the issue. _________________ 1992 Camaro 1LE Z28 |

| I usually cut alot of mine just so that I dont need to pull the heads for the next cam swap. Usually only leave enough to locate the spring and shims! lol When you only take 0.030 off you better have your calculations and measurements in order. |

| I was thinking I'd atleast want them cut down enough that I could put some 1.6 rockers on if I wanted to later. |
