|
|
So im in need of help with the wiring needed for this swap, i have a complete SD wiring harness, and i have been told that i need to repin the c100, which i think is the bulkhead right? Im going from and 89 tbi to a 92 speed density setup, ive got the 730 ecm and the prom needed, now ive got a few problems
I need to know what wires go where, and also how the hell im supposed to do the VSS.... the 730 ecm has the VSS built into the ecm on the yellow connector, and 90-92 cars have electronic gauges, Ive got a cable driven speedo with the vss mounted on the cluster....wtf do i do here? I was on TGO for like 3 hours searching last night, back to threads from 2001!!!! Gave up and posted for some crap responses.... I KNOW THIS IS POSSIBLE i just need to know wtf to do
My biggest confusion factor is the vss, i dont think that my ecm plugs even have that vss connector, am i gonna have to yyank that out of a donor car as well? if i do will it integrate into my current harness? And will that stop me from having to repin as well? To my understanding the reason i have to repin my current connector is because the engine harness has different wire locations, so if i swap out the bulkhead to ecm will that solve my problem?
Someone chime in here i am brain fried with wiring....which sucks for me since im an installer haha ive been trying to research the wiring needed while juggling a remote start clifford in the car, btw did you know our cars are the BIGGEST PITA to wire a remote start security system into? ive got 3 relays wired up and counting lol one for the clutch switch, a 5wire setup for the door locks, and ill be needing another one for the trunk pop lol _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

found this at 3rdgen.org they have a step by step forum for just what u are doing. it appears "painless wireing"
"Weird you mentioned that. I have a 89 RS which I put a 91 TPI fuel system in. My speedo was cable driven and my ECM needed a electrical signal for the TC to function. I found that painless had a adaptor to convert cable revolutions into electrical pulses. Just found the one I needed and installed it (needed a dent in the floor to clear) and everything works perfectly."
painless # 60115 or 60116 it appears... try summit |

The VSS output should be the same, just different way of getting the signal. Gauge type doesn't enter into this. Don't need to buy any special adapters.
If you have a complete harness and the complete ECM why are you repining anything? Just replace the harness on both sides of the firewall. |

I swapped an 88 maf tpi 305 into my 83 Firebird last year. Most of the information I used I got from chevythunder.com and the factory service manuals. They set me back around $100 for both one for 1983 and one for 1988 but were worth evey penny in my opinion. I and had to add in a few wires myself. I mostly used a jewlers screw driver to re pin the connectors. I'd lend you or make copies of my service manual if it would help but I'm not sure what's all different with SD. _________________ 2010 Cobalt LT

for ur bulkhead connector-
use the 730 BH conn. u have in ur hand-make a pin out from that conn. --then make ur installed BH conn. match ur diagram u just made.....
no need for any stinkin wire diagrams.
BTW i have a factory manual for a 730 ecm SD so i do have the conn diagram avalible ...
for Vss i would use the PW adapter and ur done-no mess-no fuss-clean and plugs into factory harness at factory location.....but do ur research and see whats also avalible... |

Ok looks like I do have both halves to the bulkhead connector looks like I have 4 plugs on it, 2 obviously go into the blue on the ecm and what are the other two? _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

And aaron I thought that 90 to 92 tpi used a 4 pulse signal on the vss and the earlier years used a 2 pulse signal that came from the vss on the back of the tach, so wouldnt I have to supply the 4 pulse signal or else the ecm will be reading half speeds? _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

| Aha, I forgot they changed that for the SD cars. Just run a Dakota Digital box then. Cheaper than the Painless bulls*** (seriously dude, everything they make is overpriced and poor quality) and easier to install. |

Did some work on the harness today, got the connectors all cleaned up and part of it torn down and re loomed, I want to cut out the emissions and ac crap tho, I took out the dual green plugs for the emissions box thing traced them back to the multi connection in the harness and clipped them, went to clip the ac stuff and realized I have 2 cinnectors that both look like they plug into the compressor,i know one does but wtf is the other one?
If someone can give me a list of what can go as far as connectors and colors id appreciate it! Oh also im only finding the grey half to the coil plug..... And no cut wires...... So im a bit confused there lol _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

| The other half of the coil plug comes from the distributor. It is a short individual harness. |

The two ac connectors are for the compressor clutch and compressor mounted pressure switch. _________________ 2010 Cobalt LT

so after about 6 hours of work my job is done, with a couple questions lol
first off i already cut the ac switch that looked identical to this one with a green and black wire, came across this and was confused, can anyone identify it? it has a white and a black/white wire also wtf is that red one? ive never seen it before
And this one! it comes out by the drivers side injector leg, a purple wire and a yellow wire? It comes out of the same leg with a 2 pin weather pack with a light green wire and a dark green, factory taped together (by my foot)
And here is the finished product (kinda) The looming is the painless power braid i had laying around, i used god knows how many zip ties but im pretty satisfied with the results

aaron i called dakota digital today and they told me i need an interface, the SGI-5, runs 85 bucks, although looking on TGO i was told i can move the brown wire on the vss (or something like that) and then change the prom setting from MAG to Optical (which is what the 89 runs already) Now heres my problem, after the motor is done and running well the t56 is up next, do i need the sgi-5 to run the t56? Ill be putting electronic gauges in to work with the t56 cuz i really dont feel like machining the t56, if i dont need the interface for the t56, and i dont need it for the t5.....then im pretty much golden, i just need to know wtf i need to do right now i dont wanna start this and then go uhhhhm.....i forgot something _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

^Has listings for all different tyoes of GM ECM's.
I would buy the box if you are planning on staying with an ECM that requires a VSS input (i.e. not Commander/MegaSquirt/whatever). That way you will be covered with whatever transmission you run. |

Cant the t56 vss plug directly into the 730? This is where I need t56 owners help lol I was under the impression I could run the vss from the t56 to the ecm and tap the aftermarket electronic speedo off of that, but im not sure _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

That second roundish A/C connector is probably the one that goes to the pressure switch for the aux cooling fan. It kicks the fan on when the A/C pressure exceeds 233 psi. _________________ 2010 Cobalt LT

The T-56 does not put out the 4000 pulses your ECM expects to see. You can either make the ECM stupider, or you can lie to it.
Electric speedo can be tapped off of the raw VSS output, no need to run it after the box or the ECM. When I had my IROC I literally just split the wire after the tunnel grommet and sent one to the SGI-5, and the other to the Autometer. |
