Retarded timing makes exhaust heat. Ask Mike about what plug wires do when you forget to plug in the timing connector

Or when your distributor gear stops being connected to the distributor shaft?

If you remote noid most gear reduction starters they have a run on issue. The motor creates a coil field which keeps the solenoid open.

Must have good clean starter and battery leads.

Yes time to adjust your tune. :0)

I have crappy Flowtech headers and a Jegs gear reduction mini starter. I haven't had a heat soak problem yet. Wink

Fun question..
I years ago, in an act of brilliance, removed the mounting bracket that holds all the relays by the drivers side firewall so I could mount my Jacob's Ultracoil there. The downside is that now I have no method of ID'ing the relays easily.

Every photo or reference I have found says that The fuel pump relay looks like this:

I am almost sure mine looks like this:

And I think it is intermittently failing. If I bypass it the fuel pump it will run... sometimes. If the car is hot it will almost never prime with the relay.

can anyone confirm what the Relay should look like for a 1988 TPI car? Thanks! Smile

I think in '88 the second one (old style) is the one. '89 was the first year of the new round relays. The old style had issues with the wiring shorting at the plug and the relays failing.

Should be able to ID the fuel pump relay by the wire colors going into it. Should have a dark green/white stripe going into the center pin (PinC)

If it is dead I would replace it with a regular Bosch 5-pin relay.

Why would you replace it with the newer style? Just better?

Also, My timing was off. Retarded by about 8*.

I wouldn't use the newer style either. I would use a standard Bosch relay like so:

Here's the problem:
1. Old style fails a lot and the wiring pigtail to the plug usually shorts out due to sheath shrinkage.
2. Newer style fails less but is more expensive and hard to find, plus you have to change the pigtail to swap to them.
3. Bosch relays are literally everywhere and dirt cheap. I probably have 5-10 in my toolbox right now. Still have to change the pigtail though.

Here's a shitty TGO picture of the problem I described in number 1. If your relay wiring looks like this it is time to fix them before your car burns down:

mine are not doing the #1 problem.

I have about 7 of those relays brand new, with new solder-on pigtails that match them, i'll use those.
