160 for both heads? 80 ea thats 20 per hole-10 per valve-sounds good to me.

but call a few shops and see if thats the going rate..

-----------different subject:

gasket matching-can never hurt...however-if the ONLY thing you did was gasket match-u probably wont notch any difference.
now understand that ever little thing will add up to nice gains-if u do enough things both small(gasket match-cc heads-balance- and large(cam)

have fun-pay attention to detail-ask questions-wait-u know this one...lol...

So all my 8 exhaust srals and fivr intake seals leaked. So thatll be done. Siad springs stiff so pretty much will handle any cam I put in it. Then they said 70 to set spring hieght?

Note: there is more to springs than just "stiff"--coil bind for higher lift cams needs to be considered

thats part of "attention to detail" and should be done because now all springs will have the same height and pressure.....which will leed to a smoother running engine---not required-but is usually always done....

see how these little things add up-and ur just starting---

Is a valve grind the same as a 3 angle valve job? I've heard that this procedure is worth a noticeable gain.

Price sounds low.

Springs are matched to the CAM period. Too stiff = wiped out cam lobes. Too soft = valve float.

No. not a three angle job. And I guess what he,meant was knowing whatvi want to do, I should be able tobfind I cam I want that will go well with my springs. I may do some mild porting myself. So after they grind the valves ill get heads and dobsome work before they install seals and valves and springs. I will be into the work around 350, which may be too mich for these heads but atvleast ibwill know they are in good shape.

Yeah, seems high.

Last heads I had done at Bud's in Lakewood for the sixer. $11 per valve for the grind, $60 for the mill on both, plus a few bucks to buy and install stem seals 'cause I'm too lazy to do it myself. Razz Mag got thrown in.

I agree with figuring out cam before doing springs.

I paid about 300 even for new valves, springs, seals, a 3-angle grind and all other etc. on my junky iron heads about 7 years ago. That was a good deal, the machinist is a family friend.

If I recall correctly, don't you actually have some pretty nice aftermarket iron heads? Are those what you are having the work done to?

I think I was $725 out the door at Paul's old shop for the Vortec heads. $400 for the heads (bought them from stock they had), Surfaced the heads, cut the guides down, milled off the rocker studs, put in my springs, Studs and Guideplates.

Keep in mind the actual physical lift stock SBC heads can handle before they risk smacking into the valve guides or pulling rocker studs is about .475" lift. But I've heard of it happening on heads that had less lift than that.
