Well I said heck with my good gas mileage rig and got another old toy Cool
A Cherokee Pioneer with what I believe is the original strong running 4.0 Litre and auto trans.
I think I made an awesome deal because it is in fantastic shape inside and out, even has a "nice rack". lol Oh and it's an '88, just like my 'Bird!

Only things really modified are the wheels and tires, ubber sweet camo headliner and the carpet was pulled out and the floor done with truck bed coating. Other than that, its pretty unmolested and no sign of rust Very Happy

Had mine out playing in the rocks yesterday.

Did awesome.. no breakage (other then the mis-made napa ebrake cable) and never got stuck!

And here's an awesome pic someone took of my jeep on my last outing.

Edit.. sorry, should have said great jeep! They're a blast and totally different car experience then the fbody is.

Nice action shots! That last one especially, I'm totally new to Jeeps, what all does the Rubicon package get you?

And yes totally different driving experience, this doesn't mind going slow. Lol

Dana 44s front and rear with 4.10 gears. Air lockers in both ends. Transfer case with 4:1 low ratio vs regular 2.72:1 ratio. 16" wheels. Rear disc brakes instead of drums. Probably forgetting something.. but lots of good stuff.

Oh and stock it had 31" goodyear wrangler mtr's for tires.. I've got 33" toyos on it now.

Sounds like a beast! That's probably one of the last years of the 4.0 liter too huh? I'm assuming mine doesn't have anything special for gearing, I can tell it's got a whimpy Dana 35 in the back even though some of them had 44's.

This is a 2003.. first year for the rubicon. 2006 would be the last year for the 4.0. Mine is a 5spd as well. np3550

Your's will feel like it has alot more power then mine. Rubicons a heavy weight and they only get heavier as you put bigger tires/bumpers/etc on. Mine started out around 4k lbs. Which is almost a 1k lbs heavier then a cherokee.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed those are 4k lbs. Mine is way old school with Renix? Fuel injection, couple years before the "H.O." motor with Chrysler fuel injection, I will say it gets off the line pretty well but doesn't care for RPMs much. Lol

According to the Jeep forum TJ curb weight is Curb weight = 3,092-3,832 lbs

With the heaviest being the rubicons. Mine saved a little because it doesnt have AC, but the toyo's are much heavier then the goodyears. 72#s per tire vs 52 X 5 tires. Then add the winch/plate/rear bumper and tire swing. And all the stuff you carry around.

The Renix system works well ... until it doesnt. Paul's 87 cherokee seemed to go really well.

Dewey has a newer cherokee as well. Not sure who else here has both.

IIRC paul had some problems with the Renix system initially. He could tell ya more about that than I could.

That weight adds up really fast, damn...
Luckly it's not having any runability issues right now, I noticed it has what looks like the same map sensor as my firebird so it must be a speed density system.

I know QWK had a newer cherokee, but I think he sold it.

Mine is basicly bone stock, I don't really want to mod it much, I want 4 wheel drive, and something I don't have to work on.

I am set here for new tires, so I think I'm going to put a small lift on it (maybe 2") and some 30"-31" tires, and that will probably be about it. The XJ's are a cheap way to get into Jeeps for sure, and mine has proven to be surprisingly capable off-road. We were all suprised when Paul and I went wheeling and I ended up having to go in front of a YJ on 31's to knock the snow ruts down for him.

Idle adjustment was all I had to do with the Renix. Otherwise it was all mechanical stuff and fixing what stupid people did.

They run strong!

Nice! maybe well have to do a browns camp trip sometime! I forgot to mention the guy gave me some shackle extensions and coil spring spacers that he was going to put on but never got around to it. they might give me an inch lift or so. But Ive been liking it so far even just driving to work and back. lol

Well it says the renix version made 177hp. Thats only 13 less then the HO. Plus how light those cherokees are. I mean my lg4 had 170hp and probably weighed more then your cherokee.

Yep, I drove a 4.0L 2000 Cherokee for 10 years. Sold it last summer. Most reliable vehicle I ever owned. Slowest vehicle I ever owned. Laughing That rig is going to treat the new owner well and will run forever.

I had an Old Man Emu full suspension, 31x10.5 BFG AT-KO tires on stock 16" rims, and a Durango 4x4 steel rear bumper and tire carrier. Raised the floor boards 5" off the ground but it looked normal, like it was supposed to come from the factory that way. I eventually upgraded the license plate zip ties to a homemade metal bracket and mounted a light after my wife got pulled over for no lighting on the rear plate. Very Happy

They seem to rack up the miles and keep on going, I looked at several for sale in the last few weeks, and turned them down before I landed on this one. Mostly due to having 270k + and being totally worn out. This one is an '88 with 168k on it, even the original drivers seat looks nearly new.

Someone start the CJC forum.

I've had 7 Jeeps, 5 of which were XJs.

Current is a ZJ with just 3" of lift and 31s. Didn't want to go to crazy with this one and keep it reliable for use mainly in the mountains on service roads etc.

Current compared to the two priors, little different Very Happy
