I couldn't come any closer to flooding the basement tonight if I tried.

First there was a huge lightning storm all around in every direction. Ground strikes everywhere close to the house. Eventually something got hit on the power service and we lost electricity. Then a while later we got pounded by the largest hail I've ever seen. Yes, the truck was outside. There was so much hail that it slid off the roof in huge sheets into piles on the ground and plugged up the gutter system.

Meanwhile, there is torrential rain the entire time. I check the sump pump and the water is low. Then I little while later I check the pit again and water is almost to the top of the pit! I scramble to borrow extra cords from neighbors and run a long line to a house that has power. I'm getting soaked in the rain and playing with electrical cords. Rolling Eyes I finally get everything plugged in but the rain must have tripped the ground fault detection. Now the water is at the top of the pit. I run to the neighbor's house and plug the cord to an outlet inside the house and the pump turns on. My wife told me the water level was over the pit and sitting on the rim of the cement floor in the basement. Probably 30 more seconds and the water would have run into the basement. It doesn't get any closer than that!

If it's a finished basement then it may be time to start thinking about a UPS on the sump. Surprised
