So my uncle has a 99 ford f350 powerstroke diesel, 4 door short box, larieat package. It has 290k with about 20k on rebuilt tranny. Said he'd sell to me for 4 grand. Is that a decent deal. ?

I am assuming this is a 4x2 truck or he would not be offering it to you at that price.

If he were to sell it on the open market he could ask between five and six thousand depending on condition, but it would sit for a bit as a 4x2 shortbed is hard to sell in this part of the country.

That short box will get annoying real fast but I would buy it regardless.

4x4.he has a 2007 4 door longbed Chevy uramax 1 ton and a 2012 king ranch edition f350 diesel. So he has a few to get by with

Interior could use some refreshing as far as seats and carpet goes. Body is straight besides 1 fender and 1 dent . New tires. Red. It was used as his nice rig untill he got his 07, then became work rig. 80 percent of miles highway. He is only owner

If it's a 4x4 and it's red that changes the game quite a bit. This is my advice:

I would buy it immediately. Like drive out there and get it this morning immediately. Clean it up, do all the maintenance (correctly, professionally if you don't know what you're doing, keep all receipts). Have the body work done professionally and have them buff the whole truck out. Then buy a set of n*****-rims off CL with stupid mud tires and throw them on the truck. If you can find a deal on a lift kit throw than on there. Jock the hell out of it and then put it right back up for sale. You should be able to pull ten to twelve grand out of it without any trouble. Maybe more.

Then take that cash and shop around a bit. Find a nice 4x2 Stroke with a long box and a short cab. Much more useful truck for a contractor, and you should be able to pick a nice one up for six or seven grand giving you a healthy profit and a better truck for your needs.

It will require a large outlay of cash on your part (maybe six or seven grand out of the gate) but if you do it correctly and don't try to cheap out or cut corners you will end up on the better end of the deal by a long margin.

Ya. My uncle would probably kick my ass. He would just as well have it sit in his driveway and rot, but I convinced him that I " need " it to pull his trailer for our jobs and that I need something to fit me, my wife, and my three kids in and that if I couldbt buy his I would have togo down and finance one. But I need to sell my 96 8 lug Chevy 3/4 ton first. So if anyone knows anybody in the market for one, let me know

Also at 290k, what specific things should I do to make it last. I know it needs front end work as far as tie rods, ball joints ext. It is a littlle loose. I fixed the ac. Tranny is rebuilt.

Holy smokes. Been looking at parts to upgrade, add more power,make look good, etc. And oh my goodness are they expensive. Going to be a lot more expensive of a project then my camaro. But man is it a good looking truck.

Ya. All I got to do know is sell my Chevy. I am not going to lift it or anything, just want to do some suspension to make it ride nicer

Well here's my honest opinion. I hate that generation of ford trucks. The interiors are incredibly cheap feeling (plastics, design, cloth, etc) and that Powerstroke is one hell of a dog, they can barely get out of their own way. With that said, mechanically, they're pretty good. So if you like it, buy it. Seems like a great deal no matter how you look at it.

No aftermarket stuff. Bone stock. And I gotta say its interior is much nice then Chevy of the same year's. In fact ford interiors usually are nicer. And beings it will be my cost diesel, it will be hard for me to know if its a dog. All I know is it cruises up vantage hill at 75 at 1700 rpms and didn't downshift once while pulling two 3 seater seedoos. That was nice

The 7.3 was a solid engine and for the price you wont get hurt. The tranny was the weak link. Buy it, drive it until it breaks then shop for something else. It doesnt matter wich brand you buy, they all hold massive amounts of fluids and parts are expensive. If your going to DD it, dont chip it unless your ready to spend 10 - 20K to replace the engine and or transmission sooner.

I prob not going to chip it. And fortunately for me tranny was rebuilt less then 20 k ago. I fugere from what I see on cl that's it a9 to 12k dollar truck
