Felt bad for hijacking Project 86 T/A's post.

Alright... Lets see if I can figure some stuff out.
Please, correct me where I am wrong.

1993-1997 F-bodies were equipped with the LT1 and a t56.
1998-2002 F-bodies were equipped with the LS1 and a t56.

The T56 for the LT1 should bolt right into any thirdgen.

The T56 for the LS1 will only bolt in with a shortened driveshaft and torque arm.

--------------------------------------------------------
I am currently going to pull my 700r4 and 305 lg4

So the engine I plan on buying should be 1986+, nothing older will work with a 1993-1997 T56 and I will need a special bellhousing and adapter plate if I plan on bolting the 1993-1997 T56 to anythin gother then an LT1 engine.

I really plan on putting a 6 speed in my car, so any assitance would be nice so I don't end up buying a transmission and pedals and hydraulics and then find out it wont fit into my car.

Thanks,
Eric

T56 from LT1 will work, all you need is a new crossmember. The flywheel is for 1 piece rear main seal blocks. If your block is older than '86 you need an aftermarket flywheel. The bellhousing will bolt up to non-LT1 blocks, no adapter stuff is necessary. Make sure you use all the LT1 stuff: flywheel, clutch, etc.
93 T56 is rated at 400 ft-lbs, 0.74 6th gear ratio
94-97 is 450 ft-lbs with 0.5 6th gear
Externally they're the same.

T56 from LS1 has a hydraulic throw-out bearing and will not bolt up to a regular SBC. You probably don't want that unless you're swapping it in with the LS1. Wink

*edited to fix rear main seal thing*

6-speed only. V6 4th gens and maybe some V8s did come with 5-speeds, possibly a T5.

just a little clarification...the flywheel off any LT1 is for 1 peice rear main seal. and the input shaft on the LS1 t56 differs from the LT1 t56 ,and isnt compatable

Yeah, like Mike said, T-56 = 6 speed.

And I am about 99.9% the LT1 was never offered with a T5. Smile

All LT1 F-Bodies and Corvettes with manual transmissions are 6 speeds. V6 F-Bodies got an updated version of the T5 that so many 3rd Gen owners are familiar with.
