Electromagnetic Railgun

In the research & development phase since 2005, the Navy released a video of its test fire on Tuesday. Pretty impressive...

They should change their motto to "Velocitas Ridiculum"

If the Air Force gets to have the F-22, the Navy gets to have railguns on every ship.

Ya, mile a second, 60 miles a minute, or 3600 miles per hour, or Mach 4.7, or 5.37x 10^-6 times the speed of light.

How would you control a dumb projectile going that fast? They said it would go 50-100 miles but are having problems with the acceleration destroying electronics.

that's too advanced. I like the idea but if a ship is outfitted with all electromagnetic firearms what's to stop any foreign enemy from developing a strong useful EMP to wipe them out? An entire ship would be a sitting duck, no movement and no defense, sometimes stupid weapons are the best weapons because there's no way to interfere with operation from a distance.

granted its what if but 8 years is a long time but an EMP could be a common thing then

still pretty badass though

Most (if not all) 'dumb' weapons on a ship require electricity to operate. Wink

Ships and their electrical systems are already hardened against EMP.

well I suppose that makes sense lol I'm just saying as we advance so does everyone else atleast with the current stuff we know what can damage them and I'd really hate to see something that takes megajoules of energy malfunction, don't think that would turn out too great lol
