Well I seem to have the charging problem fixed on this '87 Bird im working on, the next project is getting it thru emissions. It has a new CC carb, (305 LG4) changed plugs and wires, cap & rotor looked fairly new when I pulled them, changed oil and filter.
Results on the first try;
HC- 450 (220 limit)
C0- 10% (1% limit)

I tried setting the timing retarded another 4ish degrees with no effect. Any thoughts on what I should try next? I know next to nothing about carbs, I know the choke doesn't work and the air pump is also disconnected right now.

Choke and air pump wont do a damn thing for emissions when you test.

As always, get the car HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Carb uses a O2 as well.

I'd retard the timing about ten degrees, drill a 5/16" hole infront of the cat, and add some methanol race fuel. About 1 part per 5 gallons.

Then limp it over and pass.

Oregon emissions sucks. Do they still drive it up and down from 25mph?

Won't an exhaust leak bring down c02 emissions and possibly fail me that way to?
They only check idle emissions
And It was sitting at about the 220* mark on the temp gauge so it was pretty hot.
Oh and It could barely move from a stop with the timing retarded that much... lol

True...the cops don't like it when your DL is different from your registration.

Never had a problem with co2. Bring idle to 100 below max for the test.

You'd be surprised how many Crewbies have their cars registered at "other" addresses! Very Happy

And doesn't the law state that you have 30 days or something to change your address when you move. In which case you would be able to use that excuse for more than a month So, how exactly does one explain that to a cop?

Multiple addresses. You can have your registered address and also have a mailing address, so you can get your mail and such at one address but the address used for the registration and to determine if DEQ is required is different. You do though have to change your address on your license with DMV to match, so again, you end up with 2 addresses on your license. It is easier to do it in state, I am not sure how you go about living in one state and registering a car in another state.

Only for your mailing address, not residence where the car is located.

Enlist in the military Razz Laughing

My car was registered in Michigan for almost my whole military career, mainly to avoid some of the excessive licensing fees. Seriously though, I don't know of any other way to legally do it.

I used to trick AZ emissions with rubbing alchohol in the tank, half tank with 3 LARGE bottles, put it in a mile before the teat, shake the tank up and test, always passed with under half allowable, first time I failed with double hc, be sure to fill the tank right away though and don't beat on it for a bit so the alcohol works its way out

Probably not the best method but I dropped alot on a new cat, intake cleaning new egr etc etc and tried the crap from the parts stores with no luck, the rubbing alcohol trick came from my dads friend who was a mechanic, used to charge people to guarentee a passed emissions test, good repeating business lol

That's why I like race grade methanol. It's designed to be burned in a piston engine. Rubbing alcohol, not so much.

Well yeah I guess you can do it the right way lol I go for cheap and effective, although that tends to bite you later, guess I'm lucky?

I have never had an issue using Iso-Heet (isopropyl "rubbing" alcohol) to get cars past emissions. You just run the tank down to damn near empty so you don't have to buy very much (one small bottle does it), don't have to get very far while running on the alcohol (first stop after the test is always the gas station) and you can add it right around the corner from the test station.

Iso Heet is made for engines : O)

Race grade methanol per volume is way cheaper.

1 gallon of methanol is about 6.50$ last time I bought it.

Iso heet is what, a buck a 8oz bottle?

That's $16 a gallon!
