I was going to just swap the carrier in my peg-leg, but I don't want to do it myself and everyone wants $500 to do it. So I'm looking for a disc brake, 9 bolt if possible, and 3 series rear end. And if possible relatively low miles. I'd like to not have to rebuild it in a few years.. And can someone answer the question of why the hell everyone wants so much to do this? I realize a lot goes into it but damn!

Your paying for the experiance really, the guys that are good at setting up rearends have usually been doing it for a long time and have probably screwed up 1 or 2. lol You want it done right.

I figured that. But sadly I don't think it's really worth it. I think I'd rather buy a BW 9 bolt that'll be stronger than the 10 bolt. Another question, what kind of posi came in those BW's? And how long until it has to be replaced/rebuilt?

Its a PITA yo set up lol the first time I did one I was on it for hours, 2 crushsleeves later I got it done right, its a money maker for people who are good at it lol the carrier only needs to be serviced based on how you drive it, beat it like crazy and expect o get work done.

The only downside I see to the 9 bolt is parts, they were a pain to find in AZ I'm not so sure about here, one of my buddies had to order parts in from all over the US just to get his repaired from a track mishap

Everything you need for the 9 bolt (but expensive):

http://www.9bolt.com/

The posi in them is a friction cone type and the cones are replaceable if they are overly worn out. Driving style changes wear, so there's no way to say "after 100k miles they're worn out" or something. If you buy one, just pop the cover and check the cones according to the guide on that site.

So say I wanted to install my carrier after all, how much would I be expecting to pay for an install kit? Really all that I have is the carrier with the bearings, and the ring and pinion. There's a guy that will install it for $200-$250 in labor but he said out the door I'd be looking at more around $500.

How many splines in the carrier? You need to make sure your axles will fit in it, 3rd gens up until about 1989 had 26 spline axles, some 89's and 1990-1992 all have 28 spline axles.

28 spline. The carrier is out of a 4th gen. Zexel Torsen 3 series. I haven't actually counted the splines in the carrier nor am I very familiar with 4th gens but I'm pretty sure its a 28 spline axle assembly.

Yep, the Zexel is a 28-spline unit.

Are you changing gears at the same time or just the carrier?

Bump. Still looking for a posi disc brake rear end. 3.73's or 4.11 gears. Doesn't necessarily need to be a 9 bolt but it would be better if it was.

A used 9-bolt (out of a Camaro or TA) probably will have 3.27 gears.

Or even 3.08. Seems like a lot that I have looked at have the lower gears.

I have seen everything from 2.77 to 3.70 in factory 9-bolts.

You are correct that 3.27 is the most common 9-bolt ratio (LB9 and L98 w/700R4 and G92 package) and 3.70 is the rarest (85-85 T/A with L69/T5 and G92 package).

If 3.27 is most common then I'd say 2.77 is next.

3.45? 3.70? Nearly impossible to find.
