im about done with dumb 305's sounding more agressive than my 350...so in the very near future the flowmaster 80 is gonna have to retire...

so im going to either swap to a 40 series or do a custom GMMG style

also i have been told 3" pipe is too big and thats what i have

Really? I think that sounds awful. It has the characteristic giveaway sound of a weak V8 with low compression. But exhaust sound is personal preference more than anything so do what you like.

Larger exhaust will slow the exhaust velocity and have less "brap" noise and more thunderous roar. The thunderous roar is what shakes your chest and makes children run home to mommy. When I go to the track the cars that really grab my attention are the ones that howl with no hint of brap and pop.

Find a sound clip of Magnaflow and see what you think. Wink

thats my car as of now

i like the tone and everything but when my car is started next to Andy's 305 TBI w/ 40 series flowmaster, my car gets drowned out

Right now your car sounds better than that other guy. All you need to do is crank up the volume.

Hmm... I found some sound clips and I guess I'm not crazy about Magnaflow on TPI. Got pops and braps.

4" Magnaflow howls wicked smooth with LS engine. Not even close to same sound with TPI.

What exactly is the baseline here? What headers, cats, catback do you have?

Wonder if its a TPI thing, cause mine sounds good revving and at idle, it pops though when winding down. And all I have is some leaky flowtech headers welded into the stock t pipe and stock all the way back with no cat and some knockoff brand muffler

All I have is headers, and a magnaflow cat-back, without a cat. I think it sounds more aggressive than my big block truck with headers and glasspacks. It might be that the truck is 8.0:1 and the lil 305 is about 10.4:1. I'll nab a clip today If I can. I love it for WOT and idling around but it's pretty annoying cruising around.

I get complements on my exhaust all the time, I have hooker 2055's, hallow cat and a 3" magnaflow catback I got from Aaron. But I do have a cam too, so it's a little "Chuggetty, chuggetty" at idle, has an awesome rumble cruising at 1500RPM then it makes some noise wide open Very Happy

Skylers TPI sounds really good with the SLP exhaust. Maybe he could post videos of our cars.

it could also be that im just never behind my car enough to notice how loud it really is, cause i definitely like how it sounds on the dyno

maybe i should just install a cam to get a more lopey sound, and more power

isnt there a limit to cams with TPI tho? without effing up the computer

I think the more lope-ey the cam the higher RPM they are best for. And RPM and TPI aren't usually paired together.

Here's a couple recent videos of my '91 Z28. It has a stock LB9 with a 3" Loudmouth 2 cat back. Stock manifolds, Y-pipe, and cats. I personally love how it sounds. It has a nice, deep and smooth tone, it's perfectly livable driving around town but still loud enough for people to hear you a block away. I still have yet to install my headers.
