Found this video done by a machinist. It illustrates just how easily a heavy duty diesel block can be distorted.

Hehe

Diesels distort as they run. That's what causes the cavitation of the coolant and then you get block worm.

Nice find.
I find it hard to believe that pressure applied by hand could make the block / cylinder distort enough for the guage to fall out, especially on a diesel engine. It does come in a dodge so maybe it's legit?

It would be interesting to see what thermal expansion does to the bore after the tourqe plate boring was done. Of course that would be with the head studs installed and tourqed.

Now put it under 45psi of boost for 25min pulling 80,000lbs up a mountain pass.

Yeah, yeah, everything is distorted.

I was watching a tractor pull vid one time, and the camera zoomed in on the head of the diesel as it was pulling. I think they said they were pushing 100psi (possible?) Anyway, the announcer was pointing out how you could see the fire and smoke belching out of the head gasket as the pressure lifted the head. This was a normal run too, not one where the motor blew.

I dont buy it. If the head bolt distortion was causing 0.002" how much would you cause by hand?

Everything moves. Question is what is an allowable amount?
