I just watched a movie called "The Man with One Red Shoe", an early Tom Hanks spy movie from 1985. The reason I watched it? My parents called and told me to watch it because, I quote: "It has a Camaro just like yours in it!"
Whenever I see something like this I just think of what it would have been like to own a brand new Camaro back in the '80's. What did the original owner of my Z28 feel as they drove it off the lot for the first time back in '84? Were they excited? Did they maybe lay down a patch of rubber in front of the dealership on the way out the door? I get all nostalgic, even though I wasn't even born until the '80's were nearly over. At one time my car was the height of cool, it was Car and Driver's top handling American car, people stared when it drove by. Now it seems like everybody thinks they're just old, busted, redneck mullet-mobiles.
I don't care, I still feel like a million bucks when I slide into the driver's seat; I grip the wheel and shifter gently, turn the key and feel the V8 rumble to life like it was waiting to stretch it's legs on the open road. Finally, the dreams of hooking a perfect launch and apexing the perfect corner are here, and we're ready to roll. It doesn't matter what anyone else sees. It's all about me and my Camaro.
I think I'm obsessed. It feels great. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I know the feeling Gabe.
I remember the first time I saw a third gen, It must have been in 81 or so. Dad was in the Navy so we would do a lot of business on navy bases with all those pilots and what-not in their shiny new cars at the parks etc. I was probably only 12 or so but that first one on base at NAS Miramar. I knew right then that I needed one. Got married and had kids, they just weren't the thing to buy. However, when it was time to buy a second car, there was no question as to what I was looking for.
Third gen Camaros and Birds looked like nothing else when they came out. I love my car in all it's 21 year old glory, my wife's Acura grocery getter is faster and more powerful, it is more comfortable, and has more "features" But it has nothing on my old leaky car. You are not alone. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

There is a picture floating around that shows a dealership with about 5 brand new 91-92 trans ams out front that I like. I wasn't into cars for most of the 80's aside from matchbox stuff. And that was just to imitate movie crashes and jumps. I think about my cars previous owners and wonder how they enjoyed the car.
However, who buys an automatic convertible? A high school girl. My car was probably owned by a high school girl.
EDIT; at one point I found the address to one of the two previous owners. He lives/lived in Roy. I had wanted to roll by some day and show it to him to see if he cared what I had done to it. Then I got lazy. I enjoy the wench so much I don't really care what he'd say about it. _________________

I always love to hear someone who is crazy about their car. This is goodness. Part of the reason all us misfits actually hang out.
Thanks for the reminder!

Scary thought, I remember when a pair of private school girls came over to WSU to stay with a friend of mine. They were wearing those green plaid skirts.. oh.. i mean they were driving a brand new bright red 91 vert. |

I miss my 3rd gen already
I think it was originally a California car (found a period correct (1986)Blue/Gold front plate stuffed behind the driver's side cargo compartment in the hatch area) And it must have been garaged or babied, Hell, the original plastic behind the door pannels was still there, and it looked like it'd never been removed. All of the interior was super clean and original.
It was a great pleasure to take it out on the highway, or take it through the twisties up in the west hills of portland, I'm gonna miss doing that. I do it in the 4th gen, but it just doesn't quite have the same feel, even though the 3rd gen's handling (compared to my 4th gen) was a tad less refined. Something about that "raw" feeling made it exciting.
*Sigh*
I'm sure one day, I'll have another. Hopefully soon. |

lol i just had a red bike in my hatch last night!
i have always wondered what my car's past life was. it was owned by an old lady(who died) so i doubt it was driven hard. my 305 couldn't even spin the tires when i first got it.
its funny to think that almost all thirdgens are older than me i'm still a kid _________________ -Donald

There is something about these cars isn't there? As far as I can remember, I've always wanted one. Throughout all the other cars, i've still always wanted one. And I finally did a few months ago. It was funny. My girlfriend got pregnant and I did the reverse...I sold my SUV and got the firebird lol! But my girlfriend has the family car so it's ok. I don't regret the decision at all. Didn't pay much for it and it was in real good condition. I was born in 84 and I got an 83 _________________ 1983 Pontiac Firebird |

I really like the contradiction of that picture Al. The big V8 powered rumbling muscle car that just screams F U tree hugger, and the bicycle that softy sings kumbaya my lord.
It's awesome. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

I'm technically just the 3rd owner of my 85. The previous owner bought it at auction in 1989.(auctions sometimes are considered owners if the car was repoed or sold in stolen/recovery) Carfax doesn't go back that far and says I'm the 2nd owner. Even now, it is my all-time favorite car and I sadly don't drive it nearly enough. _________________

My 2 younger kids both came home in a 98 Camaro. The back seats hold baby seats perfectly. (and that's about all they are good for imo. _________________

I know, but that's not what the imagery suggests and you know the soccer mom in the Prius isn't saying 'well at least it's a bone stock V6' _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |
