My "new" e30 was making some horrendous noise when started up. Turns out the "harmonic balancer/crank pulley/whateverBMWcallsit" had separate completely. Stiffed the guy on almost half his asking price and picked up the pulley from a buddy. Perfectly running 325 now.
Well... once the Cascade Crew Car Hauler pulled it back to my house that is. _________________

It's an '84. It's sad that I have already have a mod list for it and it's only supposed to be a DD type car.
My A/C belt is missing but I was actually planning on at least pressure testing the system to see how bad it was. I want AC if nothing else for defrost mode in the morning. |

Wow, it looks just like mine, which is also an 84, 325e. Anything broken? Rather, what IS broken? I will tell you right now, get the powerflex front bushings from bimmer world. And as soon as i can, i have to pull my tank and i will urethane the rear at the same time. And get bmw parts from rock auto, they are half the price as a parts store, as much as i hate doing stuff online instead of supporting the economy. |

Having issues with that crank pulley. The one I got from a buddys shop is from an '87 motronic version with the CPS on the pulley. Now the teeth hit the h2o pump pulley. I have to either get a correct crank pulley or I would presume that the h2o pump pulley from the 87 would let me bolt it all back together. |

| I guess my buddies was an '88 version. They used larger crank pulleys and smaller h2o pump pulleys. Now I just need to find a matched set. Crap. |

Just an fyi, the 84-85 are different in many aspects as far as engine bolt on parts. Your guibo has a metal shield, belts are different, pulleys, motronic, intake is different, tail lights are different (facelift stuff), and exhaust. And the e30 has three versions of the inline 6 including motronic, intake, and heads.
Can you just weld your old pulley back together? I bet someone used a puller on it like i did. Luckily i noticed it comes right off before i damaged it. |

| It's like a SBC where it has a rubber dampener between the bolt on portion and the pulley'd portion. |

Next thing you know Ian will be sporting a 2015 M3 with a triple turbo charged 1.5 cylinder, 3X DI injected, 29 speed manumatic, 6 wheel drive 4 wheeled, super duper Idrived controlled (need mad Xbox controller skillz) BMW.
Have you purchased driving gloves yet
Glad to see you have a DD / beater. Be for warned, you need to buddy up with a BMW tech. Parts are not cheap for those things. They also dont last long. Fun to drive though as long as straightline contests dont float your boat. |

Buh? Parts for E30's are dirt cheap. You must be thinking of E36's. |

| I have an e30 and an e46, no abnormally priced parts yet. The only one i know of is the ps pump. I will give you this though, they have way more parts to break! |

If I can get into an M3 you can bet your butt I'm going to! Although I might piss some people off swapping an LSx into an M car...
No gloves yet, but there was a monocle in the trunk that I thought I looked good in...
E30 stuff seems to be fairly cheap so far. New KYB struts are $20/pc for the rear and $35/pc for the front at work. I might go through the suspension a bit before winter actually gets here! |

My wallet still stings from the E39 my wife had. It ate rotors every 20K, rear suspension bushings at 40K, tires lasted about 28K a set ( the aggressive alignment tears up the inside edge of the tire) the radio and HVAC control panel last about 1.5 years, the flimsy dash mounted cup holder breaks at the thought of being used, floors mats were made of mouse fur and would wad up under the pedals and...well, the parts cost alot.
BMW specced an odd engine oil, synthetic 0-40 or something along those lines that you could only get from BMW. I had a buddy that was a mechanic at Bellevue BMW and would get parts at his price. But dam, list price was just stupid. His price on the oil was something like 2.25 a quart, list price was 6.50 a quart. Same gouging on the cartridge oil filter.
It was a fun car to pitch into corners at illegal speeds and it stopped on a dime, but wasnt cheap to maintain. |

| Everything you mentioned seems about normal. Dont we all pay $5/qt for synthetic? And i have no clue if any of my tires have made it to 30k miles. Certainly not the camaro. I think the last set lasted 10k? The price to play i suppose. |
