Looks like I need to replace mine. One of the torsion springs over the door snapped in half Shocked I don't know when it happened, but when I tried to open the door this afternoon, the motor would only lift it about 6" before it stopped. When I disconnected the slide from the chain, the door dropped like a rock, fortunately it was only up those 6 inches. I ordered a pair of new springs, so I'll try my hand at them in a week or two. The only experience I have with them is to wind them up shortly after purchasing the house.

My broken spring...

which should look like this...

Be careful, I am not sure if it's an urban legend or not, but I have heard tale of people being killed while attempting to replace garage door springs.

that said my dad did this with success when i was younger.

Thanks for the warning. They can kill you, that's no urban legend. I've only wound them up shortly after buying the house, but never removed or installed one. Looks pretty straight-forward and I should be OK as long as I don't do anything stupid Cool

Always had a professional do it. I work on Roll up doors on box trucks sometimes. Smaller version, still dangerous.

Use the correct tool or at a minimum 3' pipe wrenches. Set your ladder off to the side also.

Believe it or not, the correct tool is a couple of lengths of 1/2" bar stock, a couple of feet long each. They go into the holes on the sides of the end caps and you use them as levers to wind (or unwind) the spring. And my ladder will be off to the side.

Well, that was fun. Much easier than I thought it would be. The hardest part was persuading the old springs off the rod once I released the tension. Putting everything back together was pretty easy. I used a couple of 3/8" drive ratchet extensions about 12" long to tension the springs, I think I got a little too much because the door goes up soooo fast and easy now Cool
