I did run the numbers this weekend and it is very clear that I will spend less money using the turbo engine rather then tearing apart the Camaro. So the Camaro is for sale.
Problem is, the turbo engine has way too low compression ratio to be useful to me. I quoted changing pistons and that was a hefty price as well. So I decided to sell the turbo short block and get a different short block.
Well, the new short block fell in my lap like within a matter of hours. I just bought a Gen IV 427 short block.
I also snagged a brand new BMR K-member for CHEAP! And I have claim on a 2001 harness that is getting pulled from a race car. Add the brakes from Twilightoptics and I am almost ready to put things together. |

I'll make you a semi-formal looking non-profit receipt if you donate the camaro to the Help Inspire Lama by Going Fast Foundation Council of Oregon. Think of the tax implications, it may make more sense than selling the thing....thats all I'm saying.
ohhh, and 427 = coolness....and I hate you. |

The short block just turned into a long block. I'm having a set of L92 heads installed with a 248/252 cam.
I'm selling the entire turbo engine and should break even on cost, maybe even make some money back. Turns out I have an ace up my sleeve. The turbo engine heads were ported by Greg Good and it's documented on the invoice. I didn't know how significant this was until yesterday when I learned who is Greg Good and that there is an 8 month waiting list right now to get one of his heads.... or you can buy it today from me. The turbo motor heads are better than the stock L92 I'm using, but not by a long shot and this is a lot cheaper in the end for me. That 427 is going to make plenty of power anyway even with stock L92 heads. |

| Changed my mind and backed off on the cam a bit to 242/248. Same lift as the bigger cam so it shouldn't make hardly any difference except drive better. |

If the first one takes 8 months, how long does it take to get the second? _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

This is IROCDave's brother, I go by Sticks n Stones on most websites. The LS3/L92 heads are a great choice for that engine if you're looking for good solid power on a budget. I would highly recommend a CNC job, specifically in the exhaust side, but other then that the L92 castings were meant for 427ci. Did you know that the L92/LS3 heads were originally intended for the 427 LS7 in the Z06 vettes? At the last minute they were dropped for the beefier (more bolts) LS7 heads with share ALOT of similarities still with the LS3 heads. ANyways, onto cams:
First thing first: you really don't need alot of duration for L92 heads on a big cubed engine. It's all about lift (as I think you know based on your stating you are keeping the same lift). Duration in the 230's is all you need for a under 400ci engine, and I personally would recommend a mid to low 240's duration on a 114lsa. My last setup was on a 112lsa ...
I just went through my 2nd cam search with my LS2 GTO: first was for a stock cube LS2 with CNC ported L92 heads/ported LS3 intake. This time it's a 402 with full port job LS3 heads (makes them LS3 heads by having the hollow stem intake valves lol) And my 2 month long search for the perfect off the shelf cam put me on the doorstep of Ed Curtis at Flowtech: the guy I was trying to avoid going to as "everyone" recommended him/swore by him and his custom cams. It came out to $810 for morel linkbar lifters (trust me, use link bar lifters) and his cam.
I'll post up street driving impressions, videos, and dyno vids/slips when I get them in a week or two if you are interested? My car is a 3600 stalled auto still on the IRS (though heavily modified IRS).
Iansane: dude, seriously you friggin procrastinator, GET YOUR EBRAKE FIXED BEFORE YOU KILL SOME POOR LITTLE OLD LADY!!!!

L92 heads, comp cam 224/231 lsr cam (don't use lsr on a street driven car!! My engine had to be rebuilt afterwards due to valvetrain instability caused by those massive lsr ramps)

Hey, thanks for the help. I've heard a lot of good things about your GTO. Dave just can't stop talking about it.
My engine was built for somebody else that backed out of the deal and didn't pay for it. The builder was sitting on it and decided one day, what the hell.... throw it in his car for a race day. So he did. It was in a 3300 pound Regal and went 10.7 all day shifting at 5800 RPM with a mild 230's cam. I'm taking the same setup but adding some duration and lift to the cam. I did price out ported heads but it was going to be $1300 more and I figured stock L92 is good enough for now. I'll probably swap the heads some time in the next two years.
I have to decide what intake I'm going to use. I have a FAST 102 that I bought a couple months ago just because it was too good a deal to pass up. Tonight I bought a complete LS3 intake with fuel rails and injectors. I can use the fuel rails and injectors on either intake. I need to look into what it takes to install the FAST and how much the final cost will come out to. The LS3 would probably be good enough, but if it's pretty much the same cost for either throttle body I'll probably just use the FAST. |
