I'm thinking about putting a new cam in and I will have to have the heads at least loose and almost off if not all the way. So what I was thinking was while I have them off and am doing a moderate build I might do some chaep but better than TBI heads Laughing

So I was thinking cast iron Vortec heads. Dose anyone have any experence with them or have a better CHEAP idea.

Vortec heads are excellent! Just remember you need an intake too. I'm starting to consider this swap myself. For decent inexpensive new heads take a look at protopline. They also make a version of hte vortec that are modded for bigger cams etc.

vortecs were the route i took for my 383 stroker, ive boughten everything off ebay for this motor,at relatively cheap prices, the heads i purchased brand new for 440 bucks, the intake was a polished air gap RPM intake, the one rated 1500-6500+,i purchased that for 170 brand new,its a copy'd design off edelbrocks, but compared side by side,i cant see any differences.

i plan to have this motor done by at least march,so i can give yo ufeedback results on my motor,i plan to redyno at mcgees on a weekday once the motor is ready, ill IM or Pm you the results

btw,on a side note,i swung by and picked up the latest car craft, the GMPP 350 HO vortec motor is putting out 401 hp with nothing but a cam upgrade,lt4 hotcam,oh and a 750 carb Surprised

Justin,

vortecs would be great with that combo, the smaller cubumbustion chambers would keep you compresion where it should be, and they will hava a huge flow advantage. heck they will likely out flow my 416's at almost all but the very high lift area.

You don't have to have the heads off at all for a cam. No need to take off the manifolds or anything. Just take the intake and rockers off.

If you plan on going bigger in the future, save for what you REALLY want. Don't step it.
