| Sad day. I remember lusting over that motor when I was just a newbie after Aaron got me over on TGO, from camaro.com. Its like the end of an era or something. We should write a haiku or something. |

Sold.
So this story ended with a twist. I got the engine out last night and popped the oil pan off and what do I see inside? Stock rods and cast crank from a typical mid '70s 454. **#@$&#*!!!!!! At least there was a nice windage tray.
I call the buyer and he's still interested but at $1000 less then original agreement of $3500. Fortunately, I had a half-baked backup plan. That morning I had hunted down a forged crankshaft that a co-worker bought for $25 at an auction. Bad part is it was a 1-piece rear main seal crank and I don't think it can be retrofitted to the older block. I offer to throw in the forged crank with the engine and told him I can't find an adapter kit to go backwards. Late last night the buyer calls me back and accepts the offer but wants $100 off for the stock rod bolts. I didn't hesitate for a moment!
I was feeling a bit of a loss selling this engine until last night when I opened it up. Now tonight I'm sitting at home with $3400 in my hands thinking I did pretty darn good considering what happened. |
