K so I'm sure I need to reset my timing. But it will idle, then when you give it some gas, it will go back down to idle then die immediately.

Any ideas on why?

What carburetor? I would start by setting your base mixture and timing. Then go from there.

I probly need to adjust the air/fuel ratio. How do I check that?

My guess: carb is fine, timing is crapped up. Timing not coming in fast enough will cause a stall on throttle blip like that.

What distributor is in there now? Just some repop truck unit? What is the base currently set at?

Dialing timing with a carb is WAY more involved than just setting the initial.

?
Is your choke staying on? There are many ways to set your idle mixture. I do mine by getting the engine warmed up and then turning the idle screws until I get the maximum idle speed. Then turn the engine off, average the screw turns and reset them. After that, set the idle speed. And if you don't get good response from the idle screws I bump up the idle a bit until I'm at 1000 rpm or so, tune, then lower and retune. Easy peasy.

What cam, more aggresive the cam the more base time it will want.
I run a modded HEI with 26* base and 10* mech advance.

I would say though that your accelerater pump shot is too small. Not sure on those carbs, might be a colored plastic cam on the accelerater pump that you can change to a differant color that will increase the shot and even the timing of the shot.

Good. That unit came with a whole load of weights, springs, and a nice instruction manual. Check it out. Thumbs up

BTW, setting idle mix with a vacuum gauge is easier than setting it by idle speed.

Choke could be a problem. Its just wired in with a wire under the dash that turns on when the key is on.

getting it rewired tomorrow.

That's how you traditionally wire an electric choke. Some guys wire them with a relay that's triggered by the alt light wire, which keeps the choke off when the engine is not on.

Personally I like the ability to preheat the choke a little with the key, since electric chokes always close way to fast.

I have a vaccum gauge. But does my distributor have to be set right to set my mix?

x2

It just has to run. You will converge on a good running engine once you getting running.

Gotta do both, bro.

If you can get the car running well enough to bring it out to the shop in Graham, we should be able to get it going alright.

im takin it to an electrician tomorrow. He'll look over everything and make sure its all set up right. maybe rewire the choke. Also set up my in dash gauges, external gauges, tach, and replace gauge lights. yay! haha

So when I get it back I'll be able to time it more easily with a tach.

You mean initial? All depends on the motor, and the cam. And your mechanical is a part of that too. If your set to ramp in fast and high, and you crank up the initial, you're going to ping and break something.

Rod said he's running 26* base and 10* mechanical. On the big block Mercury I run 24* initial and *12 mechanical. On my S10 I ran 10* initial, but that truck needed a recurve bad.

Small block 350. Mild RV cam. StreetFire distributor. Holley Street Avenger carb. I think Luke had his set to 6 degrees. I'll be able to tune it better when I have a working Tach. lol
