After NOT receiving my registration renewal in the mail, I gave DMV a call to see what to do and if there are any issues.
Well the only issue is the DMV computer system, according to the lady on the other end of the line.
She was actually very sharp and helpful. She took a look at my info and noted that I was the original owner,
and the car had several years of no registration until 2009.
I told her that it sat in the garage covered, I had just restored the vehicle and only use it as a summer cruiser for shows and such, and that I carry a classic insurance policy on it.
So she tells me that I should change my registration to a Special Interest vehicle for $81.00 and then buy the special tag for $1.00,
so for $82.00 I no longer have to deal with DEQ or the crap, Best of all I can keep my original plates!
There are a couple of stipulations, the vehicle has to be a minimum of 25 years old, and less then I believe it was 5K a year,
and with the current insurance policy I have I can only do 3K a year anyhow.
So just something to scope out if your ride is in the age range and not a DD.
The minute my current engine takes a dump or starts smoking…Hello new sweet shiny crate motor! DEQ can kiss my AZZ!!!!!
Too bad I didn’t find such an upfront and resourceful person when I first went to DMV to get the TA reregistered, and dumped the coin I did into it, but it’s all good as is for now!

Department of Envoronmental Quality, or emissions testing for short. Oregon vehicles 1975 and newer require testing. Washington has a rolling 25 year cutoff date.

Up here vehicles have to be over 30 years old to be eligible for collector plates, so no turdgen's yet.

The beauty part is that (up here at least) once you pay the classic registration fee, you can run an old plate. That's how the Monterey has 100% legal 1963 plates on it. Wink

That's good information Rich. My tags expired in August, and read up a bit on it @ the DMV when I renewed my licence a couple months ago. So come January, I would assume my car would just about fit the category, and I won't have to register it in Silverton anymore.

DEQ has been kissing (or missing) my ass since 1994. My car is still registered at my brohters old house on Whidbey Island. Havent had to do an emessions test on it since 1994.

@ Aaron same thing here man, I get to keep my original plates, and that was a crucial part of my decission, I wasn't giving them up!
I will post up how it goes and if there are any hurdles, but it seems fairly straight forward...but this is DMV!
I am going to take care of it next week, man am I thinking engines!

Richster, where do you live? I thought it was Tri-Cities and there isn't emissions testing there, right?

Emissions testing can suck it. I get so tired of it. I can hardly wait until Cam is "old enough" to not have to do it ever again! Surprised

Six more years for ya. Or you could find someone in a county without emissions testing willing to let you register Cam at their place Cool

No emissions for me in Kitsap County Very Happy

For those of you that register your car at another address, how do you get away with it at the DMV or even when you get pulled over? I would assume that the address on the registration not matching the address on your drivers license would create some issues, no?

Very common with military drivers. IIRC two of those three pieces of information must match with address, active military were exempt. I used to have my car registered at one address in Michigan, my driver license (expired at the time) showed another Michigan address, and insurance was here in Washington.

The expired license was still valid with my active military ID, as Michigan allows this, says to renew next time at home on leave.

So wait a sec. Now that I'm an oregon resident I can register my 86 camaro next year as a special interest vehicle and I don't have to buy plates/tabs ever again? And what does that insurance run you a year?

To: Blue89, that is what I was told on the phone by the rep lady at DMV, she sounded very knowledgeable solid on her advice, I am going to DMV this week and will let everyone know if it is solid or total Bull-shizzle!
As far as insurance goes, I pay (close estimate) $330.00 a year for 25K of replace or payout depending on the issue
