Since i've had no internet for a couple of weeks(thankyou centurylink), I got a bit of work started on the 2nd gen. Decided I'd sand off some flaky RED paint and fix that surface rust problem it has (see.. get the red out!)
Anyway.. I started sanding and here's what I found.
Not good. As you can see in that last pic, someone actually just folded up a piece of sheet metal, then welded it ON TOP off the damage. Then just sculpted some bondo over it.
So here it is coming apart.
I still need to drill a bunch of spot welds to get the remains off.
Now here's my donor car. I think its about race weight now. Anybody know where I can get some shackles this long? I like the stance!

Use some of that folded up metal and you'll be fine!
Progress is good. You're starting to look like a genuine body guy now. _________________

Hehe... drop a shaft as soon as it squats out.
Wait, that came out wrong.
You people are scaring the crap out of me. I have a 25 year old Z sitting here that I don't want to touch with the DA for fear I'll find something like that. |

Genuine? Hopefully not like the last guy who worked on it. I'm just waiting for Whiskeychick or Paul to tell me what I'm doing wrong... Go ahead if you see something actually. Though I know what has worked for me in the past, I'm just a hobbiest.
Speaking of which. Whiskeychick what product would you use to kill surface rust before priming? I've got rust beneath the old paint. I'm sanding all the old paint/rust off but pretty sure I need to kill it before coating it with anything so that it doesnt start blistering. Most of the products i've tried before either didnt work or arent meant for this type of area. |

I know there are a few "rust kill" products, and I know there is one that we use alot (ill check tomorrow for the name) But honestly I would just sand it off if you can. Its the best method, then a good coat of etch primer or wash primer before a primer surfacer so long as there is a good seal the rust will have a hard time coming back.
Let me check my books tomorrow, I know there is one primer that is best for raw metal like that.
Also, so far so good
Gonna be alot of work to fix what those hacks did to her, glad to see ya fixin it
Ill help ya along if I can or if ya have any questions see what i can do _________________ 1987 - Trans am GTA, hooker headers, Borla catback, Cat delete, CAI, 9.6 @ 75mph 1/8mile

I've done a few quarters and several patch panels before. As you can see i've learned to stay as far away from body lines and compound curves as possible.. Learned that the hard way. I tend to do that alot.
The surface rust is fairly heavy. Even with the heavy sanding i'm doing I think there's some still left in the pits. Thats why I think I need a rust convertor. Maybe naval jelly and etching will do it, but just want to make sure. I like to use POR15 in hidden areas, chassis work etc. But its not the right product for this kind of thing. The last rust convertor I used on my truck did not work at all.
For some reason there is rust underneath the original paint layer. Appears to be 3 layers of paint here. 2 of the original color and then the current red. The inside of the panels, where it's not damaged, is not rusty. That trunk drop down is the worst(wet crap sits in there of course).
Anyway, thanks for any help or advice. |

Wow, that's a pretty ingenious repair.
Good job that it's getting fixed right this time. Can't wait to see that thing when it's all finished. It'll be a sweet ride for sure. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56
