Found a 9 bolt 3.70 rear at the junk yard in tumwater. After checking the posi, I ended up bringing the rear home. After closer inspection, once I got home I found that around 5 teeth on the ring gear are pitted, for approximatly half of the tooth. Will this cause a whine in the rear?

Thanks

Was it out of a blue Camaro? That was the only f-body in disassembly last weekend.

Sucks about the damage to the gears, cause a 3.73 9-bolt is kinda nice. Very Happy

Came out of a blue firebird. It was pretty picked over the manual trans was already gone.

At least I still have the good 3.27 gears from my old rear still. So maybe I can put it together as a back up. I'll have to check out the cones over the weekened.

Ya. The 3.70 gear set seems to be one of the more popular. I have seen them at several places, not just 9 bolt dot com.

I was looking at the gears more closely today and I think they will work fine as a back up. The pitting does not look nearly as deep as I had originally thought. Also a lot of the pits are isolated, from each other not allowing them to go very deep into the gear. Here is a picture of the pitting sorry for the bad quality (old camera).

Also this rear was missing the cover. Will rust be an issue here? How can I stop the rusting without obtaining a new cover? Right now I am just hand rotating it in oil every other day.
