Awhile back the vacuum advance pod on my accel distributor ruptured. Then I found out it was basically obsolete. I did find one possible place selling it for around $60. Didn't seem like a wise choice to keep repairing an obsolete distributor that used proprietary parts. So I decided to go large cap HEI. Something I can buy a part for at any parts house.

Being the cheap ass I am though, I searched for the best deal. I found a guy on ebay that sells a complete brand new polished aluminum HEI distributor with red cap/rotor/supercoil for $45. He also had a deal with accell 300+ 8.8 ferro spiral core wires. With shipping that ended up at $91. Since my wires wouldnt work with the HEI style cap I went for this deal.

The distributor appears to be very nicely made. The shaft turns beautifully smooth, cap is brass terminal, mechanical advance works smoothly and it has an adjustable vacuum advance on it. For the price I'm sure its Chinese, however nowhere on the box or the part itself does it say the country of origin. I had heard that these are actually made in austrailia but thats probably just a rumor.

The accel wires actually surprise me. It's been many years since i've had a set of their wires. My last set was those yellow cheapies they used to sell.. Not good, not at all. These however are very nice. Very thick heavy boots on both ends. Good soft silicone too. Plug end is fused to the wire, dizzy end you have to terminate yourself. Cutting through the wire they appear well made. Time will tell. I won't be putting these through the test that my msd box/ultra coil puts wires through though. I'm moving both of those to the red bird. Unlike the distributor the wires have a country of origin.. and it is China. Sad

Now for the good part. The distributor runs great. It appears to have a performance curve allready in it. A base timing of 15* gives me 36* total. I think in my application I'll need to put a lighter set of springs in however. They're probably being conservative since its one size fits all.

Time will tell, but for the cost of a regular hei tuneup you can have brand new stuff. I don't think that deal can be beat.

Glad to say that so far the trucks running better then ever. Very smooth running now. Time will tell for longevity but these "chinese" distributors seem to work well.
