Also, jackstands have a nasty habit of sinking in grass or blacktop. Make sure you have them on solid ground and try to push the car off of them before you get underneath.
I had a jack with a bad seal and it gently set my car onto my chest and trapped me one day when I thought I didn't need jackstands. It was freaking scary! If it gave way instead of leaked down, I might not be here today...  Ever since then jackstands are in use whenever any part of my body will be under a car for even a split second.

Talking about sinking on grass, there was a kid on TGO awhile back that posted pics of his car that sank in the grass on jack stands and did some considerable damage to it. You should have seen the responses he got. As I recall the post got locked after about 50 people calling him a dumb shizzle.

I remember that post. If there was ever a kid who deserved to be called a "dumb shizzle" it was he. 
One thing that I have found in my life of mechanical redneckery, is that pier blocks make fantastic (if not heavy) jackstands when on dirt or grass. I still have a few over behind my Dad's garage that we would use with a 2x6 or 4x6 on top of them to keep the block from mauling anything. |

Jack stands are a must use item when the car is in the air. I would not risk jacking a car on any surface other than concrete. I have tried it on asphalt ( when I was in my teens and lived in Sacramento) and this didnt work well either. The sun heats up the oil and the stands settle.
Another thing to keep in mind is to have a fire extinguisher handy anytime you are under the car. One of my employees brother died a couple of months ago due to burns over 90% of his boddy. He was under a vehicle with a torch loosening bolts when he got to close to a fuel line fuel started spilling, on fire, ontop of him. He died one week later at Harbor View.
According to his brother, it was a painfull death. Not the way I would like to go. |
