|
|
So I swear, planning for this buildup has me reading TGO once again, after I thought I had sworn that hive of scum and whatnot off for good.
Problem is certain things have never occurred to those mouth-breathers, things like swapping from a carb to EFI.
The bottom line:
-Is there any difference year-to-year in gastanks? (Other than the mysterious late-model baffled tanks)
-Is there any difference from carb to multi-port tanks?
Thanks, guys. |

I have personal, in-depth knowledge of three different tanks:
'87 2.8 Sport Coupe - MPFI
'87 Trans Am WS6 - TPI
'84 Z28 L69 - Carb with helper pump in-tank
All tanks were the same, except the '87 TPI tank was baffled. Oddly, that wasn't supposed to happen that early but GM has always been a little fuzzy on stuff like this.
All carb or EFI pickups should go in any tank and work perfectly fine. All three tanks except the baffled one were exactly the same in mounting and dimensions both internal and external. The difference in the baffled one... it has baffles.
I ended up using the '87 TPI tank in my '84 Z28 with the '87 pickup and a Walbro 255 stuck on the end of it. No problem.
Bottom line Aaron, hit up the JY and grab a tank from any MPFI/TPI car and you'll be good to go. Use the whole tank, or just the pickup. Whatever you want. It all seems to be interchangeable. Only thing I haven't seen is the TBI tank/pickup but I can't imagine it being any different. You may want to grab the hardlines that go from the tank to the engine bay cause it makes plumbing way easier. That's what I did, and all the TPI tank/lines/fuel filter bolted right into my '84 easily. I had a TPI parts car that I used all my old carb stuff to convert to carb after I was done. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

My current plan is to find a junkyard car with TPI or a V6 (read: V6 ), drop the axle and the tank, pull the pickup out of the tank, strip the pump off (so I don't have to pay for it ), and then pull all four lines out from under the car.
Then it's Racetronix and Walbro time, baby.
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to buy something I couldn't use, and then have to buy a whole new tank. |

Perfect.
Should work fine. Not sure about the V6 fuel lines, I don't remember if the size is the same as TPI.
Walbro pump is what I have but I built my own fuel pump harness with 10-ga. wire and a MegaSquirt-triggered relay running through my fusebox directly to the battery. Isn't that pretty much what the Racetronix harness does too? _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I probably would have used factory wiring too if my car had it to begin with. Aaron's probably doesn't have any either since it's an original carb car. Mine did have a tiny helper pump in the tank, but the wiring to it was tiny as well, looked like 18ga. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

They are. We discovered that replacing the rubber lines in John's Trans Am.

The v6 lines are the same dia. However, how they are bent up in the engine bay are different from v6, TBI, TPI.
The sending unit w/o pump is the same for all of them. _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

We also discovered that by accident replacing the lines in John's car. The metal lines don't come up as far, so the veesix rubbers are way longer than TPI. |
