Ok, so for a while my car has been down due to it leaking out of gas from what i'm guessing is the vapor canister.
Yesterday i changed the O2 sensor in the car and suddenly boom, it works great again, drove it around all day without issue.
Thing is, last time it broke down, we took it to a shop and the guy just unplugged the cable hooking up to it, drove it a month, it happened again.
does it seem logical for the O2 sensor to be the cause of this all? or should i really be watching how far i drive from home. _________________

Unplugging the cable to the solenoid on the can causes the entire system to always be under pressure (or vacuum as the case may be). Bad idea.
Try this: Take the tank vent line off of the charcoal can. Remove the can and all the lines, and cap the vacuum ports at the throttle body, but save all the stuff. Put a vented gas cap on it (I ran one off of an old carbed truck). Take the tank vent line and route it through a cheapo carb fuel filter and into a catch can. |

Or maybe grab a new can w/ solenoid from the J/Y and call it good?
Don't think the o2 has anything to do with it _________________

| Best of luck finding one that's still functioning. Mine went out with less than 100K on it. |

well right after my post, i drove to town, confirmed everything.
died, 35 mile's from the house. this time no gas leaked from the canister tho, it did do the same thing, sputtered like it wasn't getting gas, pulled over, died, won't start again, i could smell gas pretty bad, looked behind the throttle body and it had gas on it, pulled the hose off for the air cleaner.
gas leaked outta the throttle body..i don't get why i couldn't get it to stay running once i reved it the whole time it was sitting in the drive way, but as soon as i put the 02 sensor on, it ran fine for a day and a half before dropping dead again..
no 3rd gen daily driver back to the HHR |

| Has the fuel pump been replaced on this car? If so, are you 100% sure that it was done correctly? |

| If I remember right, the EVAP only purges when the car is at cruising speed... Maybe thats why you don't have problems running it in your driveway? |

The car did it the first time and we changed the fuel pump. 1st thing that came to my mind, but gas didn't pour out that time.
I'm about 85% sure everything's right, if it isn't all right what would be hooked up wrong that it would work one day and stop the next.
the car broke down in like november. whole time no matter what if i started it, it'd choke up, and die, wouldn't hold a steady rpm period. i couldn't even move it from top to bottom of the drive way without it dyeing.
this time no gas poured out either.
I'm no mechanic, but i do like to think i know enough, and what i don't know family members usually do. but this has me puzzled. |

| sounds like something not hooked up right. You didn't accedently mix up a couple of lines in the back at the fuel tank did you? |

I'll have to pull out the book and double check.
but i'm pretty sure i didn't mix anything up.
the whole thing was jerry-rigged to begin with. i thought a brought a little order when i went thru and redid it all. but this weekend i'll have to check again.
there's alot of mysteries tho that i'm not quite understanding.
I'll take some pics to show you guy's what all went on, i'm guessing the previous owners really didn't think anything all the way thru, they cut a hole above the tank. thinking they could pull the fuel pump out that way, when that failed, they cut the metal lines. replaced with cheapy rubber hoses, i put more heavy duty ones. and a brand new pump. |
