Has anyone had a shop replace a clutch on a 3rdgen? I want to get an idea of how much it will cost to get my Camaro back on the road. If I had a place to do it, I'd do it myself, but an apartment parking lot is not the ideal environment for car repair, not to mention a violation of my lease agreement (thought I did swap an intake manifold in the parking lot of my last apartment.) _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

Will it make it to Lakewood in it's current state? If so, I currently lack a project in the garage. |

John, if you can get your hands on a flatbed or tow dolly, and a few gallons of diesel fuel, I did just buy a big shiny red tow rig... |

Will probably be another couple of weeks till we can do this. I still have yet to get all my stuff over here, then I need to clean out the garage (no small task itself).
I have:
Four tall jackstands
Tranny jack
Tow rig
All the hand tools we will need
You guys will need to figure out:
Trailer or tow dolly
High floor jack (my good one be all broke and shizzle )
Compressor, air wrench, and lines |

Only time I ever actually used that thing was putting the SM465/NP205 combo into my K5. Kept it around though, in case I was feeling lazy. |

Iron Muncie by itself ain't bad. It's the Muncie in front of the iron New Process gear-driven case that gets ya. |

Ugh. I did that SM465/NP thing with no tranny jack. Luckily I only had to remove, not reinstall. It was hard enough gently lowering and bench-pressing that combo out from under a Suburban on my back, I had no intentions of lifting that sucker back up there!
Lol compressor. I can do a clutch in under 3 hours with no power/air tools on my Camaro. Geez, Aaron, man up dude. You're getting soft. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Nothing wrong with using the right tools to make a job simple. I use tranny jacks and air tools for all trans I do, even aluminum autos. _________________ 1986 Camaro Z-28 IROC-Z 350 swap |

James has a tall jack. I've got a compressor at his house, but its a big 50 gallon monster. I got tools and lines too. Last time we did the clutch we didn't use air tools and didn't have any problems. In fact the hardest part was reinstalling the torque arm mount! The f-ing bolt refused to thread!!! Took about 1/2 hour to get it to cooperate! _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

Done plenty of clutches jambing the flywheel, Gabe
Blasting the flywheel bolts off of the engine in seconds with an air wrench makes me happy on the inside.

All right, you got me. Air tools for the flywheel.
I forgot that part, I've never had a flywheel worn enough to need a resurface. I just check with a straightedge, make sure there's zero groovage, and rough it up to bed the new clutch. Never had a problem, and I get to leave the flywheel in the car.
Sorry I called you names Aaron, can you ever forgive me? _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Ever wonder why your brake pads wear faster than they should?
Do you fire up the engine and use a whizwheel to "rough up" the flywheel? I guess I'm a n00b.
Use Loc-Tite on the flywheel bolts. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
