Got a wild hare and traded my old big red Ford truck:

for a bigger, redder... umm... Forder truck:

Can you tell I like old ford trucks? Razz

The new beast is an '85 F-250. 107 or 207K on the odo, but the engine and trans were rebuilt 66K ago (have the receipt).

It has a 6.9L diesel (gutless, but faster and better mileage than the 302 Razz), and a C6 with a two-speed US Gear overdrive unit. It's got the Dana50 scissor front axle, but it's a front leaf truck so an SAS swap is much easier than on the coil-sprung F-150.

I got 14mpg around town with a hi-rise canopy on it. Very curious to see what it will get without so much wind resistance and weight in the back.

More to the point, I've been shopping diesel kits for the IDI Harvester engine. Gonna try that first, and if it's still not enough balls then I have the perfect platform for a 'Stroke swap. Very Happy

I doubt that thing cares about windresistance.. or whether you have a house being towed behind it.. You'll still get 14. Does it have a turbo allready? If not, get one. And you forgot louder, that thing probably clatters to beat hell! lol

I had an 89 that I blew the 7.3 up in, swapped that out with a 6.9. That thing was a beast. Have fun.

Run your diesel at the engine speed where you make peak torque and the mileage will improve. The Gear Vendor overdrive is a really cool device, but lower speed is not better with a diesel.

My 7.3L PowerStroke makes peak torque somewhere around 1800 - 1900 rpm. I can get 22 mpg highway if I peg the engine right in that zone (64 mph) and just leave it alone. Go to 2000 rpm or more and the mileage drops to 19 mpg highway. Mine is a 2WD with 6-speed manual, but I have seen 4WD owners get the same mileage with a custom tune.

By the way, welcome to the Cascade Crew Ford diesel club. It's almost as big as the unofficial Jeep club! Very Happy

I've found www.fordtrucks.com to be a good forum for Superduty owners. Maybe it's a good site for older trucks too.

It seems to vary widely from forum to forum over there. I originally joined a few years back because they have a few knowledgeable guys on the FE engine forum, and I wanted to pick their brains while I was putting the Monterey engine together.

When I bought the F-150 I stopped by the 90's truck forum on there. Nothing but morons. Hell, a topic on whether or not to let your e-brake snap up went like three or four pages. Rolling Eyes

oilburners.net seems to have a lot of IDI guys on there

I think it'd be a cool summer project, Paul. I'll go find a Chevy LUV, and you can supply the Volvo D16. Very Happy

Stock 750HP/2250lbft?

LOL

Actually I wouldn't put anything that big in for performance. The powerband isn't usable for the transmissions available to make it "Fast."

It'd be quick as $hit... and you would be just as fast with your house in tow... but not fast.

Total capacity: 55 qts.
Filters: 2 full-flow, 1 bypass
Oil change interval: 20,000mi severe duty, 35,000mi standard duty

That's a hell of a motor, Paul. Shocked
