so i put the new timing gears/chain on put the new timing cover on along with new oil pan gasket, then i realized that the distributor is gonna be all outta whack, should i not have stuck the timing cover on quite yet, how do i install the distributor and get it all aligned right?

Are you changing belt systems? If the tpi setup is serpentine the water pump turns backwards, non serpentine belt setups turn the other way. So they require different pumps.

If you have a valve cover off, turn the motor over clockwise until the #1 intake valve closes then continue clockwise until the timing mark lines up. Then drop your distributor in pointed to #1. Without the valve cover off, again turn clockwise, but with the #1 spark plug out. Put your finger in the hole and feel for the compression stroke to push air out. Continue clockwise until the timing mark lines up. Then again install distributor pointed at #1.

if you left the motor at TDC on the compression stroke, you are ok. If not, you will have to find that to stab in the dizzy.

Waterpump depends on the belt setup. The serp belt setups have a reversed waterpump. As long as you have the right pump for the right best setup, you are golden.

Edit: beat to it by the Master B.

so i do have to take the timing cover off or can i use the timing mark on the harmonic balencer??

(dumb question) is the intake valve the one on the right or left?

and i wanted to keep the same belt setup but i was looking at the water pump and it has a hole in the top and i have no idea what connects to it, so i was wondering if i need a different one or not, the motor was v-belt to begin with, had a serp belt around crank and whatever else it went to lol, but i was gonna try to keep the same v belt setup will that work or should i convert all to serp?

if i convert to all serp, i would need a new water pump, alternator, pulley for crank and pulley for power steering...is there anything else i would need?

sorry for all the questions, i just have no idea what to do and i dont wanna go any further puttin this thing together until i know what im doin

There are two marks on the harmonic balancer one for top dead center and one for bottom dead center. I would leave the timing cover on as long as you put the chain in the correct position corresponding to the crank and the cam.

Take off the valve cover of the drivers side. Turn the engine over by hand, by watching the valves you should be able to determine which mark is bottom dead center and top dead center according to the balancer marker. The exhaust valves are in the center and on the outside of the head are the exhaust valves. Once you have the engine at top dead center now you are ready to put the distributor in. Take the cap off of the distributor and insert it into the engine. You want the point of the rotor to point at the number one piston(front of the car drivers side). Then you should be good to go.

okay cool, that is easier than i thought,

another problem just came up, the TPI manifold, the two bolts in the middle are not at the right angle to bolt up to the head, LG4's have the same heads as the TPI 305, but did they have different bolt hole angles?

if you are using a newer tpi manifold, with the older style heads. You will have to drill them out to the correct angle.

i think instead of drilling, since the intake is aluminum, im gonna try using a file, if that doesnt work then ill drill it

i was trying to figure out the distributor and i put it in and it pointed straight at #1 cylinder but it wasn't in all the way cause of the oil pump, so can i just turn the oil pump and then put the distributor in and then am i good to go or should i turn the motor and check for compression when its pointing at #1 or what?

Aluminum is so soft that it loads up the file in no time.

Looks like you got the timing under control.

Sorry, I should have remembered those center intake holes when I gave you the TPI. The motor I took the intake off of got a carb intake put back on it and I had to drill the holes out to bolt it on, so I don't know why I didn't think of that. Embarassed
