Today I finally made some progress putting together my new motor for the bird. Got the bottom end put together minus the oil pump. Just a few things and the short block is complete and I can start assembling the heads and put them on.

Are you concerned that the paint in the lifter valley might come off over time and cause problems?

Heh, I know Ford blue, but it's pretty and as much as I love orange-red it would look tacky under the hood of my car. As far as the paint peeling off I haven't had problems in the past when doing it but who knows I haven't experienced everything by any means.

I've heard that painting the lifter valley actually helps oil drain back ('cause of the smoothness?).

Usually you want to use Glyptol though to paint the inside of a motor. As long as the stuff he's using sticks it will work though. Would make me nervous. I don't even use the glyptol stuff.

I found some electric motor varnish from granger that I used on my block.Much cheaper than glyptal. Come in a spray can.

In the past I've also used rustoleum and it held up for over 5 years til I tossed a rod in my little 302 motor.

Bigger pan solves the need for a slick coating. Best way IMHO if a bigger pan isn't used is to smooth the casting flash itself.

It's what we do at work if someone has their heart set on it. Coatings require the bock to be rediculously clean. Not worth it unless you roadrace.

Being that this is just my lil ol 305 I'm not too worried about drying out my oil pan, to be honest I just painted it to keep it from rusting when I got it back from the machine shop and because it looks neat. I did, however, dremel some burrs off the block where the oil runs back down, since it was easy enough to do.

I ordered a new fuel tank and straps for it this morning. Hopefully my leave request goes through so when we get back I can have a whole week off to get this swap done.

Where did you buy it from and how much did it cost?

I might have to get a new tank, too.

I bought my tank from http://www.autopartswarehouse.com . They sell two tanks for the fuel injected models, one 14 and one 15 gallon. As far as I can tell they both will fit, they use the same straps and fuel sending unit. Mine was $263 with straps after everything was said and done. I was going to get one from GasTanks.com since I had purchased one for my 1967 Plymouth a few years back from them, but this place offered a better price so we'll see.
