I thought some of you might like these.
These were e-mailed to the shop this morning. They are from a test flight over the Olympic Mountains late last month. I don't work for Boeing, but Boeing puts a lot of our product on their planes at customer request. This one is wearing the paint scheme for ANA (All Nipon Airlines), who are supposed to be Boeing's fist 787 customer.

Cool pics, Al.
Do you know what the 'teeth' are on the trailing edge of the engines? Do they break up the airflow exiting the jet or something?
They make the engines look like giant holesaws. |

I have no idea, but I'm pretty sure they have something to do with fuel economy |

I hear that the wing flex had the engineers rethinking the aerodynamics, lift and drag of the plane. What worked in the past won't work for the 787 because of that flex. |

It looks cool. I don't know anything about planes so are there some significant upgrades with this plane? Does this replace another model? School me o' aero nuts. _________________

Its a whole new class of airplane. It is made principally out of composite materials whereas traditional planes, in fact all planes since the 30s have been made out of aluminum as the principle material. This allows it to have a lighter airframe due to the need for far less skeletal structure. This means that it can carry more fuel or passengers, the real beauty is that it carries more of both than a plane of comparable size. The weight savings also means that it can cruise faster, and farther on less fuel this of course makes it far more profitable than other planes of its size category. Additionally it is supposed to be light years ahead of all other planes in terms of passanger comfort. Including windows that are large enough to see out of, another benefit of the composite fuselage. 787 is the schizzle

Sweet pictures..I work at the Boeing in Kent.
When the 787 flew over us on it's first flight, everyone in my building started going crazy, it was pretty funny. _________________ 91 Z28 |

The flex in those wings is something like 12 feet! Its supposed to act like suspension and absorb most of the turbulance and rough air giving it a much smoother ride. Kinda like riding in a big caddy in the sky!
