ok i got it dialed down to two cams that seem to be popluar with the vortec heads....

comp cams xe284
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-SK12-250-3/
comp cams xe274
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-SK12-246-3/

leaning more towards the 274...you think it would be fine for daily driving as well...

after i get this all built and get headers on it id imagine im ganna be around 350hp...im ganna run a thin .15 gasket to try and bump compression up a lil more so it should be around 9.4:1 running stock bottom end

its a 350/290hp gm good wrench motor...so its got the crappy pistons in it...

what yall think...vortecs are set up to handle .525" lift

I have the 274 and it is very streetable. I've seen 18 - 20 mpg with 4.10 gears on road trips and almost never have to downshift out of 5th gear on the road.

I kind of wish I would have gone with the 284.

Either one will take some good tuning to make run right.

well good to hear its streetable but the fact that you wish you went with the 284 doesnt help me decide much more lol....on TGO seems most ppl running the xe274 with vortecs with success...ive also been told the 262 and 268 were pretty nice...

Any more cam and you'll start losing because the heads don't flow enough.

Oh and you wont have to rev that high, heads wont flow it either.

Both Rod and I's cams advertise higher than 6k... but we both peak at around 6k or just under. We have the same cylinder heads- Pro Topline 200cc.

That's too small. The 274 and vortecs is a proven combination.

I've only seen it done in mags.

The Lunati does have steeper ramps than the XE and a nice set down of the valve on the exhaust side. Comps seem to beat things up.

Plus he said he didn't want to rev it....

i dont want to rev it cuz im going to be running stock bottom end...and going to be sticking with the stock self aligning rockers for some time till i can afford to get some nice comp pro magnums...this is just going to be for my daily driver...im planning on building more of a race oriented street car later...prolly next year...so im just trying to make a fun street car...and on the street you dont really need to rev past 6k...from what ive read on TGO the vortec and comp cams xe274 seems to be a very popular combo...and since it seems to be a proven popular combo it gives me more confidence in spending the money going that route...although only bad thing ive heard is that some ppl complain about the comp cams xe cams making a lot of noise due to it being harsh on the valve train and some others dont have any problems at all...i was going to run the 262 or the 268 after reading an article in chevy high performance magazine...but ive heard ppl saying the 268 just doesnt give enough ooomphhh...and ive had two ppl on tgo tell me they are running the 274 and its plenty street friendly...im going to be starting a really awesome job here soon...that will give me a much larger budget...and i plan on building another car for more of a weekend thing...but i dont want to jump from 250hp 325tq car to a 500hp 500ft tq car...so this going to be my in between step...seen to many ppl jump into a high hp car to either crash it or get killed because they had no idea how to handle all the power...i think it will prove to be a fun street setup...and prolly will write a nice write up on the site soon as im done with the build for those who are in a similar position can get a good idea of what to do...after i get new hardend pushrods and roller rockers ill prolly rev it a lil higher...but for right now im going to play it a lil safe

im going to wait on that cam...guy going to throw in this cam and timing chain for free cuz he has no use for them hes dropping and ls1 in his car...he said they are pretty much brand new...is there a way to tell if the lobes still good...he only put 1000miles on motor before he got the ls1...if the cam is good i might just run it for awhile...saves me some money now to put into rockers or headers...

heres cam

Buy new lifters for it, unless you know for sure each lifter is matched back on the lobe it was run on.

By the way, you change your mind like a damn woman!!! Laughing

LMAO...yeah i have a hard time making decisions when it comes to spending a lot of money...plus i just learned about the cam and timing chain last night...so that was really changing mind...ill prolly run the cam for a lil while save up and do a roller cam later on...just my budget at current time is limited...but i ganna be starting new job soon so funding my car needs will not be an issue...
