|
|
While scrounging around in the Poulsbo junkyard this afternoon, I happened to come across a Firebird with lexan tops. I'd seen this car there before, even checked out the tops, but the side I checked was locked. Today, I checked the other side, opened the door and lifted the top - WOW, that was light. I ended up having to bust the lock cylinder for the driver side, but after about 10-15 minutes, I had a set of tops at the counter.
These are actually in really good shape and all they need is a good polish to smooth out the surface, and some paint on the exposed metal parts. Even though the pin styles are a bit different, I checked them for fit, and they work! After I transfer all my hardware over to them, all I might have to do is adjust the receiver for the pins on the body, and adjust window for end of travel. _________________ 92 Camaro

Pretty light huh? do you think you could weigh them for me? I've been thinking about picking some up for autocross and racing. _________________ Richmond 3.73 posi| 36/24 sway bars | SLP LM2 | Koni's | Ground Control 800/200 | Y2K wheels | Dyno Don headers & Y-pipe | airfoil | BBK underdrive pulleys | Raised strut mounts | Extended ball joints | LCARB'S

So I've heard
We typically don't get the weather to make them do that though...
Skyler, I'd weigh them, but I don't have a scale handy. A guess would be about 1/2 to 2/3 of what the glass ones weigh. |

What year car were those from? My '91 RS had lexan tops. They were stress cracked all to hell. Couldn't tell from the outside though. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

| By the paint pen marks on them, they came from an 89 bird. From the inside, all I can see are the hard water marks on the outside. They are tinted on the inside quite dark too. |

Those lexan tops are notorious for developing stress cracks. I've never seen a pair that weren't cracked. |

No cracks in these ones, but I am having a heck of a time getting the hard water spots polished out. Any ideas, tricks, tips??
The only other work they need is some paint on the exposed metal and on the plastic edges - Black, or maybe body color. |

Got one cleaned up today. Took quite a bit of wet sanding Apparently, they have some sort of clear coat on them and that's where all the water spots had baked in, the only way to remove them was to remove the coating.
I also went back and pick up the inside plastic trim from the hook style tops that were in that car (obviously from another car). They don't have the hole for the lock cylinder, so I can just remove the cylinder and cover the hole. The lexan tops fit and latch on my car, so I'll just clean them up and put them aside for now, need door hinges fixed and windows adjusted first |
