So lets say hypothetically I were to be looking for a certain color of a certain type of automobile manufactured by a certain company with a certain optional removable roof.

And lets say I was contemplating an engine with an induction system that was not entirely [/natural[/i].

In addition, lets say that I live in stupid Pierce county where I have to pass sniffer and dyno roller (but NOT visual) tests for CO and HC (but NOT NOx) to get a vehicle registered.

Would said non-natural aspiration (of the single variety) be theoretically able to pass emissions, or should I find a pre-86 car?

What motor? With how high our emissions limits are a newer motor shouldn't have any trouble passing. I have no cats and passed with almost half the limits.

A newer obd2 motor with cylinder specific fuel trims should have no problem passing thirdgen emission levels. Even if it doesn't you can tell the state it's a motor swap and then just have to pass the no-code obd2 style emission test.

In layman's terms, yes. You have to pass the emissions standards of the motor, not the chassis. Which is the plug-in-and-go method.

Idea

The PCM and engine would be from a late 90's car, if my mad plan were to come to fruition. My plan was to chip out all the stupid stuff, and run a straight pipe through a Magnaflow.

Ian, do you know of anyone whose successfully done this kind of DMV trickery?

One of the guys that used to work at my shop swapped a k series Honda motor into his 89 civic and did it that way. He didn't try tuning it to pass emissions though. Just the obd2 scan method. I think it would've passed with a highflow cat and decent computer work

However, what makes you think yours won't pass the sniffer if properly set up?

Even without a cat it should pass thirdgen standards. Mine passed with the exhaust dumping out the side!

Mine passed the sniffer test with no emissions gear what-so-ever! Wink
