So I got my 9 bolt in this weekend, just in time to discover it makes a not so good noise. It's only on accel and sounds like a bearing? It's more of a low howling than a higher pitched ring/pinion noise. Anyone had this before? Kurfbird mentioned it might be a bearing too.

Also, it has maybe 10 lb.ft of grip between the posi unit with the driveline held. Has anyone made their own shims and tightened up their carrier? Doesn't seem like you can buy them anymore but I can make them easily enough if I can use standard steel.

My 9 bolt made that same whine, that you are taking about only on acceleration. I eventually took it in to get fixed but I had taken it apart before hand. I had looked at the bearings non of them looked bad or pitted. However there was wear in the ring gear. I replaced the ring/pinion, bearings, and had the cones shaved. You can get all the parts bearings/shims from ratech, its a yahoo store. http://ratech.stores.yahoo.net/
I think you can get 3.70 gears from jegs/summit. I found a good used set though in the junk yard.

That site has better prices than what I've seen so far. Thanks for the link. Hopefully it's as easy as tightening things up. When I got it from Bruce the fluid was already drained so I don't know what it looked like. Gears seem tight. I guess it's time to take things apart and take a look see.

I have the GM manual on 9 bolts if anyone needs it. It points to the bearings too. Can you replace the pinion and carrier bearings without readjusting it?

Why don't we have a technical article section for old stuff?
