|
|
For my 89, I have a later model Delco TheftLock head unit from a 2002 GMC/Chevy truck which looks almost stock when installed. It has a CD changer output and I wanted to use that for playing any other type of audio I so choose. Later it will be for a satellite receiver Later plans are to install a line level converter and change the speaker outputs to preamp so I can install an amplifier and keep the stock look.
From Precision Interface Electronics (PIE), I bought the GM9-AUX which plugs into the 9-pin CD changer socket on the back of the radio, this emulates a CD changer and makes the radio think it has one connected.
It took all of 5 minutes for me to rack out the head unit, plug the harness in and route the other end to the side of the console. I haven't decided yet if it will remain there.
Now with everything hooked up, I select the CD/AUX button on the radio until CD 1, Track 1 is displayed, then I can listen to whatever I can hook up with a set of RCA cables. Here, I have my phone playing MP3 tracks I have stored on it.
PIE is very particular on which model years (and which vehicles they're from) will work with this piece. Mine happened to be one that does. _________________ 92 Camaro

Now that's cool! I think my mom did something similar with her '05 Tahoe for ipod hookup and such. _________________

Pretty nifty. Listening to music, in a car? I can only imagine... _________________ Richmond 3.73 posi| 36/24 sway bars | SLP LM2 | Koni's | Ground Control 800/200 | Y2K wheels | Dyno Don headers & Y-pipe | airfoil | BBK underdrive pulleys | Raised strut mounts | Extended ball joints | LCARB'S

I posted about that a while back and was debating on doing that in my truck. Wish I could come across a nice truck radio and do that exact thing in the camaro. _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

I remember that series of posts. You and I were researching options for doing this and I hadn't quite decided to go for this. I'm glad I did now, next step is the satellite receiver |

In the truck I ended up just installing an inline fm modulator. Guys seem to like it.
Now the radio in the camaro is completely gone. Trying to decide my options for it. |

My truck has the same looking stereo but it's tape with the add-on CD. I've been thinking about bypassing the audio feed from the remote CD player so I can listen to my mp3 player. The only problem is I'd have to have a CD in listen to it but whatever. Way to keep that stock look Al! _________________ E30

If your truck is 2000 or newer, it should be able to do both. The harness supplied allows you to keep the existing slave unit (if applicable) - some head units can control 2 aux inputs. No need to keep a CD in the slave unit. |

| Mine is a 97 unit. Would be cool if I could add it! I'd like one for my BMW as well. It has the changer controls but no factory changer. |
