ok my explorer won't start. it will turn over it will sputter but it will not fully start and run. the most it will do is sputter for a few sec. then die out. i have 15gallons of gas. It drove fine on the way to the court house after work. I parked it and returned after about 40 min. It started but as soon as i put it into gear it started sputtering then died.
.. I don't know what it is. I'm hopping it's not the fuel pump That would suck major. I think it's the inertia switch, but i wasn't in any collision. or it could be the filter. I'm hopeing it's the filter. thats cheap..... _________________

Filters don't go tits up like that. It's a progressive clog.
Fuel pumps do. Need to put a gauge on it.
Look for obvious vacuum lines, etc. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

i depressed the spader valve while it was cranking and there was no pressure in the line. so we're pretty sure it's the pump. now i just got to figure out how i'm going to drop the tank and change the pump on an explorer with a 22gal. tank with as much clearence as the maro. _________________

Before yanking the pump make sure you have power back there. _________________

| You mentioned the inertia switch. I assume you already tried that? Mine was located in the trunk on the driver's side of the latch on my mustang. |

I had the same symptoms on my ford falcon.
The misses ran the tank down to almost empty the day before and it picked up a heap of crap from the bottom of the fuel tank.
i eventually got it started and drove it like i stole it on the FWY. _________________ "Its not the speed that kills, Its the sudden stop". |

If there is no fuel pressure it shouldn't sputter and cough. It just won't start at all.
If the pump isn't running, could be pump, wiring (fuse) or inertia switch.
Paul's right. Fuel filters usually don't just clog instantly.
Make sure inertia switch is reset, test power at the pump with a multimeter. Go from there.
Good luck. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Ok i got a fuel pump from all american classics here in vancouver for $40. Now i just gotta get 3 5gal. fuel tanks a floor jack and 2 jackstands and i'm ready to do this thing.
.
on a side note all american classics have like 20+ thirdgen Camaro's and firebirds. they have rebuilt t-5's for $600 and everything else that you will find on our cars. They pull the part while you wait. and it's usally only a few bucks more than LKQ. They are online and can ship their parts nation wide. here's that address... http://www.allamericanclassics.com . _________________

All american is a rip off. I forget you're new to the area. Most of us here know this and stay away. Even my shop tries everywhere else before them, even if we know they have something we need.
They are ridiculously proud of what they have. I'd be very very suprised if the "rebuilt" T5 was indeed rebuilt.
If you find a thirdgen in an LKQ you'll pay 1/3 of what All American wants. They even wanted $100 for a stock v6 thirdgen seat that was moldy!
On an exploder note.... used fuel pump is bad ju-ju. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

All-American Classics is cool, but they overvalue everything. I went there once but never again.
What's LKQ?
Good luck with that used fuel pump. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I gave the fuel pump some juice and it worked fine. I'm not doing this as a perminent fix. just going to have it in there until i can afford a new one. with everything else going on right now i'm spread way thin.
.
.
So i got my jack and jack stands today and after waiting in the rain for an hour cause i locked my keys in the car i'm finally home. But oops, i forget to get 3 5gal. gas cans _________________
