So, my Walbro 255 in-tank pump started whining today.
It's been dead silent except for a slight hum that was inaudible from inside or with the car running. Today I get off the freeway after a lean AFR cruise to work, and it's definitely audible while the car is running. I have about 400 miles on the pump and over 3/4 tank of gas.
Odd that it just started whining today after an easy cruise. Never even got on the throttle much. I'll keep an eye (ear) on the pump and see if it changes sound more.
Guess they call it a Whinebro for a reason.
Similar experiences? Anecdotes? "Your pump is gonna die!" people? _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Don't have much to offer. Mine has been in I am guessing about 5 years, quiet and no issues.
Good luck.

YOUR PUMPS GONNA DIE AND TAKE YOU WITH IT!
Its a phenomenon known as the walbro death whine. After a day of warning, it will short out and spark in your gas tank. Cars have been known to spontaneously explode in a deadly ball of fire!
jk i have no idea about electric pumps

Thanks for warning me Jake!
Nobody travel on I-5 south of Olympia today. I'm gonna be a fireball apparently and they'll have to close the freeway.
Seriously though, after some research it looks like this is fairly normal for a Walbro. Some make noise, some don't. As long as I still have fuel pressure I don't mind the whine. It's kind of a beefy sounding hum/whine and it's not too loud. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Ditto this. Mine's been great for about 75k so far. _________________

Mine's fine. And you can hear it, but it's quiet in comparison to my exhaust. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

OK, I'm less worried now.
It's audible at an idle, sometimes, and definitely when the pump primes before I crank the car.
I can't hear it over my exhaust when I'm driving though. I think it's about as loud as Paul's is. I'll just run it and quit freaking out over nothing.
Thanks guys. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Hehe, come up and listen to the Carter inline I run on the S10. Thing sounds like an F18 under the truck, and that's with the vibration buffers installed.
Apparently that's normal for those pumps, though. I've read on the Hotrodders.com forums that you can put a tranny mount between it and the frame to quiet them down. |
