I was under my Ford Superduty 7.3L diesel today changing rear shocks when I noticed I have no muffler on the exhaust system. I've been driving the truck for 2.5 years and had no idea! Laughing

All I can say is that Ford makes one tight cab because it is quiet besides the clatter from the engine bay.

No catalytic converter. Straight pipe all the way. Actually, I don't think diesels have catalytic converter anyway, do they?

The EPA started mandating CATS in 04, CA had them a year earlier. I believe 04 was also the first year for the EGR on diesels, bad idea. Lots of soot re entered into the intake tract = lots of plugged EGR valves. The emmission equipment requirements have gotten worse every year since 04.
