In the first pic it appears to have a starter on the far side of the flywheel.

Found some more pics of general maintenance and internals. Maybe not the same model engine, but similar scale. Can you imagine the machine shop that fabricated some of the parts in the engine?

Cat makes a 15.8 liter truck engine that makes something like 1850 ft lbs of torque. That giant engine there makes twice the ft lbs of torque per liter. That is impressive. Smile

For some reason I think that starter has more torque than my car.

Apparently so. Some smaller shipboard diesel generators are started with high pressure air. I think they get them spinning before they introduce the fuel - but I may be wrong Confused

I wonder if the starter is a large diesel. Some old cat engines were started with a gasoline pup engine. You started the gas engine, then engaged the clutch to the diesel engine. You then got it spinning with a compression release like Al said. Once its spinning good you closed the compression release and the diesel took off on its own.
