I scored big time last night. Paid $500 for this T/A. Very Happy I almost feel bad for ripping the guy off...

Here's the story:

I was browsing craigslist for something totally unrelated to thirdgens. For some reason craigslist's wacky search algorithm decided to show me an '87 Trans Am. The ad said it had a knocking 305TPI, which is great for me as I just need fuel system parts for my Stealth Ram swap. I called the guy and went to buy the car yesterday evening.

I arrived, and started looking it over. The interior is mostly not great, except the dash and pad are perfect. 140mph speedo and uncracked dash pad. Brand new high-end Alpine CD deck. Full tank of gas. Very Happy The hatch struts, and all power accessories work great. The body is straight as an arrow and has all the trim and stuff. Paint is also not great, but it does have original paint and decals.

I asked him to start it up so I could hear the knock, and he did. It didn't sound like a knocking motor. I looked at it for a sec, and noticed the waterpump pulley was shaking and rattling! Bad waterpump bearings.

I drove it home, and the 700R4 shifts crisp and smooth everytime, no slipping. Brakes work great, great shape tires. Handled good, it's a WS6. Good struts and shocks. The engine runs smooth, idles great, no missing, no SES light. Seems about as powerful as a 305TPI should feel. It's only a drum, 2.73 non-posi rear. Also has an aftermarket muffler, sounds and looks like a flowmaster.

The plans are to pull this car and my '84 Z28 apart at the same time, then build two cars out of the parts. I'll probably put the WS6 stuff and the fuel tank, lines, and miscellaneous good stuff in the '84, while the Trans Am will end up with the 305, but carbureted and with the Z's suspension. Then I'll eventually sell it. I already have several people interested in it with this configuration.

Well, time for pictures! That was a long post...

Sweet score man! Are the crosslaces a set or are they all fronts?

Looks like quite a deal!! Would you be willing to swap T-Tops? My 89 has a tear on the drip guard on the passenger side, mostly cosmetic. If we do, we may have to swap hardware between the two.

I'm pretty sure they're a full set. Good rubber too. I was gonna check that along with some other stuff when I get off work today. The offset front to back looks correct though. Aren't crosslaces the lightest thirdgen wheels?

Sure Al, I'd be willing to do that. Is yours big pin or little pin tops? My tops are in good shape from what I saw when I drove it home. I'll double check after work.

I think the small pin, smaller than the 92. Don't think it would make a difference anyway. IIRC I'll need to retain my hardware for the locking mechanism. I know the 92 has a lock, but can't remember for sure if the 89 does. Easy swap over in any case.

All right, I didn't even remember the lock. Been too long since I've had a t-top car. Wink

If you ever get down around this way before I sell it, I'd be happy to swap with you.

Are them the 15" or 16" lace?

I think the 16" are the only front/rear set correct? The 15" are universal?

Nice steal!

Those are 16". The 15" curve outward dramatically at the lip. They LOOK like front/rear.

Correct. 16" crosslaces. They do LOOK correct front to rear.

I'm gonna replace the waterpump and clean it out today. I'll do further investigating as I go. Wink

Too bad the RPO list is nowhere to be found...

Thats a nice find! I may be picking up an '87 Formula for $500 from a guy I know, it won't pass DEQ so he gave up on it...
Anyway...

Id be interested in those cross laces if they arent spoken for already! Smile

The crosslaces will most likely be staying with the car. I'm hoping to sell it as a running, driving vehicle with a carburetor in a few months.

If my plans change and it gets parted out, you guys will be the first to know. Wink

If I don't need a matched set, that's fine with me. However, my driver side looks fine and possibly could leave that one for you to change out Wink

Al, does your ripped one still keep water out decently well? The passenger side on mine is in pretty good shape, the metal trim piece is flaking a bit though.

Tony, I can do the same deal for the driver's side. It is peeled up a bit at the rear end, but I'm sure the rubber can be glued back down while it's disassembled. It is not ripped. Does yours keep water out also?

It would be really cool if all three of us could coordinate the same day to meet and do some swapping of t-top parts. Can we agree on some weekend day soon? I can be available all day long most Saturdays and Sundays.

I'm not too worried about little stuff swapped out here and there. I plan on giving the car to my brother for a project when I'm done stripping stuff, so I'd like to keep it as functional as possible.

Mine keeps water out for now, heavy rain and car washing though will cause small leaks. As for the metal trim piece, is it the black part on the edge of the glass (handle side)? I'm going to paint that anyway. Wink

Name a weekend and I'm sure I can arrange to be there Very Happy I may work on Saturday, but Sunday I can make for sure. I know most of the time by mid-week, normally Thursday, if I'm needed for Saturday.
