Ok, I gave in to the dark side and bought some new bling for my car. I'm saving up for the new Kenwood Excellon 993 and saw this face plate. Cost was $92 with shipping. Took about 2 weeks to get.

The plate is very well designed and made. It's heavy, the back of it is made from UHMW plastic and the front plate is aluminum and kind of a black textured finish. Goes well with the rest of the car interior. The lettering is perfectly programmed and perfectly cut. The "IROC-Z" lights up in red with supplied LED's. You can also get blue illumination. I've not installed this yet, kinda waiting for me new Excellon.

I think the only thing I would change is the screws holding the face plate. The silver galvanized finish does not go with the rest of the car. Probably a little flat black spray paint on the screws will do the trick on this.

When I get my new head unit I'll post some pictures of everything installed.

Looks like the ones from HUmounts.com or MAPtech Enterprises

Can't wait to see it installed.

What head unit are you going to go with?

Here is my choice. Will work with my existing HD radio receiver. I really love HD radio. The song labeling is the best, but the sound is a lot crisper and clearer. You don't notice iit until you get in a car without HD radio.

I just picked up an HD radio for the Mazda and I can't seem to pick up alot of the HD stations. I was rather disappointed. 94.7 never comes in HD, and the KGON stations cut out here and there.

What brand of head unit did you get? Now I have an older Kenwood 890 something. Has the seperate HD tuner. Until very recently Kenwood seemed to be the only high end HD radio out there. I've seen the Dual, and I think Jenson. Listened to them and they were crap. I've always liked Kenwood equipment and have never been disappointed in anything from them. I get the 3 KGON stations, and 106.7, 105.9, and others I don't care for. Not much more I'm interested in listening to. I've never had any problems with fade out or breaking up with my setup.

Yes you do lose some stations going to HD, but for me the clear, clean and crisp sound along with song labeling make it a nice setup for me.

I'm going with the 993 because it has USB, bluetooth for my phone with 1000 phone number memory, and I can run my Iphone with it. The USB is so nice I'm not sure why they even put a cd player in it. I can carry one thumb drive or 100 Cd's. I read that people are even using small hard drives with this unit.

I've got 2 jvc units with built in HD. They're identical, the car starts to pick up HD when I hit the freeway out of longview. The trucks I can pick up HD partway through longview, sometimes even by the walmart on the far side of town. It's so much better to listen to I usually turn it off when I lose service lol.

Got a Pioneer unit. DEH-P4000UB. It came with the HD add-on. I only get 2 KGON stations. Normal 92.3, and their Live station.

Weird.

Not sure yet,I haven't gotten that far. I just know the Alpine I have had for the last 10 years is starting to die.

Well I've done a lot of homework and it seems the 993 is one of the hottest head units out right now, and shipped I found it for $215. Locally they are up around $320/$340 and up. And it will work with my existing HD receiver. But that's not the deciding factor, it's the history I've had with Kenwood products. Never been disappointed at all in anything they make. When I first put the aftermarket sound system in my car I did all the wiring with the heaviest speaker wire I could find, an amp power line good for twice the size of the amp I have, and the best speakers I could get. My Kenwood head unit was on back order, so someone loaned me what I was told was a high end Jensen unit. After firing it up i remember thinking i paid $1000 for this? Holy crap it sounds terrible. But I couldn't take the stuff back so I figured I was stuck with all of it. I didn't think there would really be any difference in head units. Boy was I wrong. I put the Kenwood in and it was total bliss for me. The Jensen was the problem and the guy paid almost as much for it as I did the Kenwood. I've had the Kenwood now for about 5 years and it's still working perfectly. I just want the new features the 993 will give me.

Anyway, check out the 993 and see what you think.
