Sorry about your troubles. Sounds like you're carrying some burden for your family. If so, you're a good man for helping and being a care taker. Good news is that you're just a young pup and your future is not yet decided. Wink Best thing for long term is to put top priority on your education so you can look desirable to employers and get good jobs. Is there something you have in mind that you want to do for a living? No rush to decide. Just wondering if you already have a dream in mind.

Last November my wife had her work hours cut back to nearly zero and that is still the case. My income was cut 16% and there will be no raises this year (or next, I'm sure). We're fine but we did have to change our lifestyle. I'm not complaining. Just have to be careful now.

Sorry bud, you aren't the only one. I also am unemployed at the moment and trying to figure out a way to move across the country! Laughing

Hang in there and keep up the good work man. This whole thing should be over in a year or 2 and then its all good Smile

Cameron my young friend…Hang in there!
You are carrying some weight on those shoulders for sure, but you are a young dude and will be fine.
Your journey has just started, and it will improve, a few hurdles along the way, everyone hits them, just various times and degrees.

QWKTRIP is correct, your education is imperative to success, so you have to stay focused there, or as best as possible.
Employment is difficult all over bud, but stay positive and apply everywhere!
My oldest is in college and working at Starbucks, it’s a decent gig, respectable coin, and benefits after some time in, plus flex hours for school, and hot women everywhere… Cool
he also worked at the theater, just basic stuff, but was making coin.
So stay tough dude…You have a whole crew here for ya!

Hang in the Cameron. Things are going pretty descent for me right now, BUT, everyone here can tell you about times when we have struggled. It sadly part of life.

Jon and Rich said it very well. Focus on the future, and do the best you can to ensure that when you are out on your own, and have a family of your own, that you are able to provide them with security and hopefully not have the tough times.

The key thing to remember, is that the hard times don't last forever, things WILL get better, things will get easier. Try to take the time now to focus on school, and enjoying being a teenager. You can't get these years back, back the most of them, and put yourself in a spot where you can be successful for the rest of your life.

Over a year out of the Navy and can't get one job. Trying to live off my fiance's pay check...which hasn't been it's best. She's a nanny and there's no real benefits there.

Things just seem to be going downhill for us. Can't pay for insurance anymore. Living with my parents, we used to support ourselves by buying our own food, we can't even do that anymore. The money just seems to disappear.

The most frustrating is not being able to get a job. Couldn't even get one in Illinois when I lived there for 8 months. Constantly applying...I'm at wits end.

Anywho, it's 2:24 am here, can't sleep because I'm thinking of finances. But think I should try and sleep, I could use some sleep.

Anyone need a hard worker that pays attention to detail and instruction? That's also from Snohomish or Skagit County? I don't have to be paid much, but I won't do minimum wage. I have reliable transportation (camaro is my DD). I'm 22 years old, so I'm in decent shape, I can do manual labor (bad knee so not too much, but I try). I'm selling myself here! Buy me! PLEASE!!!! I can even be a chauffuer! $0.50 a mile! $1.00 a mile after 50 miles.

I'm desparate! I'll even take penny donations!

*sigh*

Sounds like I'm doing better then most on here, and I thought my life was crappy. Some of my problems are better off not said in "public".

Qwktrip said it first and best. Just keep reading his post.

:edit: GED is not good enough in todays world. If any way possible, get back in school.

Just got to take this down time to further your education! So it sounds like you are on the right path. Just have to stay positive, hunt down leads, and network! You mainly get jobs because of someone who knows you, not who you know.

my job isn't glamorous or anything, but at this point I'm thankful to have one. I'm also fortunate to only have a few expenses to take care of, and the rest of the money is free for me to do what I want with it.

Kind of discouraging that I've come up with nothing in about 6 months of looking for something in what I'm going to school for (welding). If I can't come up with anything after I graduate, I'll probably go back and take machine shop classes.

I try to keep my head up, and as travis said in another post, there are jobs out there. Things are just really slow right now.

I was looking for welding jobs for a friend of mine yesterday and found a nice looking job with General Dynamics working on stryker vehicles at Ft Lewis.

https://fortress.wa.gov/esd/worksource/ShowJobDetail.aspx?JobID=1535161&SearchID=338797174&Sort=&Direction=&PageSize=25&PageIndex=0&RecordCount=13&Sender=Employment

I know thats a long commute from portland, but at any rate there was no shortage welding jobs listed at https://fortress.wa.gov/esd/worksource/Employment.aspx at least in a state wide search there were lots. might be worth a look if relocating is something that you would consider.

A friend of mine works for General Dynamics and loves it. An ex-marine who I think works on the rigs as a mech.

I'm not doing amazing, but I'm not doing too bad. I've been riding my bicycle to work/school. Now that I moved just a couple miles from work it's not that bad. Very Happy

Need to save money for the bodywork on the bird!

All I can say is keep your chin up, and things WILL get better, they always do.
Most Americans 35 years old or older have been through tough times, it will pass. Dont forget these times when things get better, they will return and you need to be in a position to deal with them when it happens.

What have you been doing with your time? When an employer sees a gap in employment they immediately look to see what you did to fill your time gainfully. Education, volunteer work, and even flipping burgers at McD's. It's an indication that you are indeed a hard worker and full of initiative - the kind of traits they want to see. Time gaps with no activity are detrimental.

You were in the Navy and probably had a high level of responsibility. Do you have a college degree? If not, let's face facts: 22 years old with a high school diploma is not a good leverage position to demand anything other than an entry level job. You're going to have to work your way up again. Take any job to start the process. You can keep looking for better jobs in the meantime. I suspect your strategy to avoid minimum wage positions is holding you back.

FAFSA

You don't need to be able to afford classes. I'm going to school, my wife is going to school we both work full time. and both qualify for pell grants. I am taking two classes right now tuition at my local C.C. ran me 800 bucks for them. the pell grant paid all of it and in fact I got a check for $0.80 Smile wife got 300.00 back Crying or Very sad
Any way the point is get the GED then just enroll in school, no job required. Honest. Getting a job is tough, getting in school is easy. some career fields will prove to be easier than others to find work in. My wife will be a registered nurse in two years, she should be able to walk in to almost anywhere and get 20 per hour, if she is selective and is willing to relocate then 30-35 is possible.

Don't get too discouraged, and keep in mind the catch 22 here, if you wait till you can afford college then you must pay for it, if you go in with nothing then you pay nothing. Its what they don't tell you in political campaigns, high cost of school... blah blah blah yes its expensive IF you put yourself in a position to have to pay. pell grants are free money that you never pay back, they are available to low income students take advantage of it

FAFSA may be more problematic for him, since it will take his parents income into effect. But, there are ways, I would say, finish of the GED, then find a way to continue schooling at a CC.

I was refused FAFSA until I was out of the parental realm.
